  • Getting cables around the vehicle

    Hi all,

I’m sure this has been asked before, but struggling to construct a search that will locate it for me. Specifically, if I want to get cables (at this point a UHF antenna cable with plugs on) from engine compartment to behind the radio area, what’s the best route? I’ve seen people mention grommets and I see a couple in the engine compartment. There’s a little blank grommet that is easily removed and when I poke a screwdriver through it seems to hit wadding. Is this the one? Or there’s another that seems to already have quite a few cables through it. If anyone were able to point me in the direction of the “best” route, maybe even a couple of photos, that would be helpful please.

I recently installed a wired in dual camera dash cam and was quite pleased with myself that I managed to get wires over the top of the passenger compartment using one of those rigid electrician’s rods from Bunnings. Wired it into the unused 12V power outlet wiring near the 220V outlet in the boot (GXL) and stuffed all the electronics above the light behind the drivers sun visor. Was able to get the USB cable for the rear camera through the existing flexible cable gland to the trunk door. All in all very satisfying.

There's numerous options. I've tended to use existing grommets. HOWEVER! be super careful not to damage existing cables. I heard of someone who accidentally damaged one of the wiring loom cables that come through on the passenger side and ended up with major problems

The small blank grommet on the bulkhead/passenger side is a dead-end. There is a maze of aircon ducting etc on the other side. The same blank grommet on the driver's side is usable tho.
There is a large grommet on the passenger side with a fat wiring loom thru the centre. That grommet has a couple of unused blanked holes any one of which will take the antenna cable. Just cut the top off the rubber tip covering the hole and carefully push a length of fencing wire thru followed by your antenna cable.
I've used that large grommet for my antenna cable, driving light harness, and dual compressor cables.
You will also need to disassemble much of the trim along the passenger-side, glove box etc
