Prado 150 self started alarm went off and solenoid went crazy
Hi ..my Prado Kakadu alarm went off as the battery was almost flat. The solenoid started going crazy. I had to disconnect the battery. After recharging I reconnected the battery. The alarm went off and the car self started. I couldn't shut it down and had to disconnect the battery. Smoke started coming out the engine as electrical wires were melting. Has anyone somr helpful info as I'm not certain as to what was going on.

Faulty starter motor solenoid. You can get new contacts for the solenoid, but I'd suggest getting a new starter for reliability reasons. The aftermarket options are ok, but not as good as genuine. -
Take it to a professional, if wires are melting it indicates a likely short.Comment

Did the motor actually start or did the starter motor just keep turning it over. I had a similar problem. Found to be water on an electrical plug under the dash.Comment

Thanks the professionals worked it out and Kevoc was correct it was water on an electrical plug under the dash which shorted and caused the vehicle to try and start. It eventually burnt out the starter motor which also had to be replaced.Comment

Unfortunately wires were pushed through the large grommet surrounding the wiring loom nearest the steering wheel and not sealed adequately. After washing the engine water seeped along the loom and onto the plug. As well as the engine turning over the brake lights would come on when parked and nobody around. The plug has a number of wires going into it but the opposing plug just seems to be a type of blank with pins. Iv'e cable tied it upside down to prevent any further issues as well as silicone the offending wires.Comment

Exactally the same issue with mine except I didnt wash the engine but been driving in a lot of rain.Comment
