After trawling through the numerous pages on extra fuel filters and bad fuel I finally decided on a Racor 230R10 with the optional water detection kit. I'm expecting to have to buy fuel from some not so reputable places, so a few hundred dollars is cheap insurance compared to an engine re-build.
I have fitted it as a 10 micron Pre-filter and wired it up in parallel to the factory filter warning light. Having it as a pre-fliter also meant that the factory blocked filter warning will still work. Once I got the bracket sorted it was a 30 minute install.
It was cheaper for me to get the Fuel Filter primer pump, spare filter element and water probe kit on ebay from a US seller. I actually contacted the Australian distributor and the wholesale price was more than the shipped price from the US.
Extra bits I needed were
- 400mm of 3/8 fuel hose
- 2 hose clamps 8-22mm
- 1/4" to 3/8 hose tail brass fitting
- 1/4" to 3/8 hose tail 90deg elbow brass fitting
- Mounting bracket. I made my own. I printed a plastic one first and then got it made from pressed Stainless Steel.

First thing to do was to fit the brass fittings. The straight hose tail in for the inlet and the 90 degree for the outlet which gets connected by the extra hose to the inlet of the factory filter.
Next was to check the water probe to make sure it works. The probe part number is RK30880E. It screws into the bottom of the bowl. The sensor has 3 wires and also comes with a light that I didn't use as I was connecting it to the factory warning light.
The red wire needs 12v power, black goes to ground and the yellow wire is the negative trigger. This is handy because the factory detector is also negative trigger. There are two wires coming out the factory sensor. A ground wire and a trigger wire. I just spliced the yellow wire to the wire that was not ground.
With the wiring hooked up, I dropped the sensor in some water to see if the factory light came on. There is about a 2 second delay but the factory light turned on every time I dunked it in the water. I was now happy to wind it back into the bottom of the bowl, plumb it up and fill it with fuel.
The water detection probe sits quite high in the bulb. It seems that you would need to see a fair bit of water before it would trigger.
Plumbing was easy. Pull the pipe coming from the tank off the factory filter and connect to the straight brass fitting on the Racor. Run a 400mm long bit of fuel tube from the outlet of the Racor back into the factory filter.
To prime, unscrew the black knob on top of the fuel filter and pump until full and you start to feel resistance. Screw the knob back down into the body. I then started the car and it only ran for a few seconds. I then primed the factory fuel filter til it was firm and then the car started and ran as per normal.
