Further investigation leads the dealer to believe that the fault exists with low pressure side of pump - high pressure side is working apparently. Still waiting for special service tool to arrive Friday, then 2 day job of replacing pump can begin. I've now involved TMCA and the nsw dept of fair trading.

We may not have lemon laws, but the Australian Consumer Law should help cover you:

Since 1 January 2011, the following consumer guarantees on products and services apply.
Products must be of acceptable quality, that is:
      • safe, lasting, with no faults
      • look acceptable
      • do all the things someone would normally expect them to do.
      https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/co...mer-guarantees

The bottom line is you have a right to a repair or replacement. If a suitable repair cannot be made, then replacement it is.

But all dealers are FACTORY TRAINED. They should know, we pay a premium for such high service. (not that i do)

Saga ongoing. New pump did not fix the issue, still stalls. Now 2 weeks since it was delivered back to dealership.

Emails sent to Phil Mccarroll himself who is currently overseas but is conversing with Toyota via email. I have outlined my request for a replacement vehicle under Australian consumer law and Phil is discussing it with TMCA. Have to give him thumbs up for taking ownership of the issue.

mmm I wouldn't buy an engine with DPF unless I could completely remove it immediatly. I will stay with the 3.0L I think this will be the chillies heal of this model. Imagine taking a car with this extra complexity out into the outback.. No thanks.

                    Watching closely.

Apparently you can remove them. Probably not completely legal though.
You may as well remove the catalytic converter too while you're at it.

not the point of the exercise to remove it... the manufacturers should be coming up with better options if they do not work effectively enough.

Hi all. Got our house on the market at present and we were hoping to get enough profit to upgrade the 2004 1KZ 120 diesel but I don't think that is going to happen.... It would appear the 1KZ is a very long lived engine and if I keep the engine oil and filter chages up at 7500 a time it will probably do 500K. Got 250K on it at present. Several of our friends have said they want to get a new Prado and I have told them all to look at the comments on this group before they do any thing. Avoid the D4D at all costs!!

Need to keep some perspective, there are millions of Toyota D4D in lots of different models and we hear about the failures. You'll be struggling to find any engine that does not have some problems and even the best manufacturing processes have some level of error, that's the nature of the bell curve and normal distribution.

I would say that 2 weeks on the op has a pretty strong case to demand a new car. This may turn out to be some tricky problem with the GD or it may be a one off. Always sucks being a guinea pig.

By the description of the problem it has nothing to do with the DPF. DPF is a pain but you have your choice DPF or pollution, I was just driving behind an old diesel patrol and was struggling to see the street through the black smoke which is what the old tech gets you. And diesel pollution is nasty cancerous stuff, ask anyone who works in an underground mine what they think about breathing diesel fumes.
