  • What is the best diesel engine oil for the 2.8 litre ?

About to pick up my very first diesel-engined car on Tuesday (a 2.8 litre) and am seeking your learned opinions. What is the "Gold Standard" re diesel engine oil? I want to spoil my new baby. All I know about is the full synthetics for petrol engines. What is the equivalent (and what brands) for modern diesels ?

Where are you planning to get it serviced?

Any synthetic thats ACEA C2/C3 spec. These specs are highly specified and most major oil makers have a oil 5w30/5w40 that is suitable. What I have found with this engine that it isn't too hard on the oil. From factory, it's my understanding Mobil 1 esp X1 0w30 is used which is not readily availible in stores.

If you are looking at more of a boutique oil, Redline Oils from the states have Euro 5w30 however they are not certified but 'meet or exceed' which is something that you need to be aware of. I have a few quarts on the shelf for the euro pocket rocket in the garage.

Because the 2.8 has a DPF now, oil choice is now something to be critical of with Toyota stealerships using the 'universal oil drum' in the back.

It's a bit like a thread on tyres, everyone has their favourite. As has been said, any branded full synthetic emissions system compatible oil will be just fine. Just stay away from the older style diesel oils because they will clog the DPF.

There has been pages and pages of discussion on engine oil previously, but of course that relates to the previous "Non DPF" model. Oil spec if critical, as is the grade of oil eg 5w/30, 5w/40 etc..depending somewhat on the climate you drive in etc. I am awaiting delivery of a new GD Prado, and the first place I will look carefully is the owners manual for the oil specifications etc. What I do know is that the oil must be DPF compatible....but likewise I will be looking for the gold standard oil, as diesels with EGR and DPF desperately require the right oil spec. I try to buy my engine oil in bulk, so I will be very keen to hear what other folk use in this vehicle...and very interested in what the dealership uses..as the wrong oil will cause expensive problems with the DPF.

A useful thread, as I am in the same situation.

The manual indicates 5w-30 (manual can be downloaded).

For fully synthetic, in addition to Toyota having their own, I have spotted a few that 'seem' to match the DPF requirement:
            a. MOBIL 1 ESP FORMULA 5W-30
            b. Caltex Delo 400 XLE Synthetic 5W-30
            c. Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30

I not not sure how to get a Toyota dealership to put in your preferred oil, other than their approved Toyota oil options. There could also be more fuss on warranty issues I would imagine.

I have 3 Toyotas. They and the 2 previous ones have all been dealer-serviced. They have all used oil that I supplied. Provided the oil meets or exceeds the manufacturer specs, they have no reason to provide a warranty fuss. One young mechanic tried to say that I had to use "their" oil to keep the warranty valid, but the older mechanics (and the supervisor) quickly shut him down. I always run much higher spec oil than the dealerships use.

I have a stock of Mobil 5W30. The pack says "meets or exceeds the requirements of: API SNNN, SM- ACEA A1/B1- ILSAC GF-5- Ford WSS-M2C946-A/Ford WSS-M2C929-A, GM Dexos1, Honda/Acura HTO-06. No mention of ACEA C2/C3. How does ACEA A1/B1 compare ? Sounds like I can run Mobil 1 in my 2.8. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Dexos2 spec oils should be ok for dpf's. Heaps of oils now meet this spec in 5w40 and 5w30.

Personally I wouldn't use it in the 2.8 GD engine, unless it is specifically the "Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W30 oil" that you are referring to, else you will stuff up your DPF. This is a big issue, as its quite confusing unless you look closely at the detail of what oil you can and can't use.

"Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30" is made with a proprietary blend of leading edge components formulated to be fully compatible with the latest Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF's) and Gasoline Catalytic Converters (CAT's). Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has been designed to help deliver outstanding performance and protection in conjunction with fuel economy benefits. Key features and potential benefits include: Mobile 1 ESP Meets or exceeds ACEA C2/C3" (See the Mobile website)

However, I would double check before using any Mobil oil by speaking directly with a Mobil Lubrication adviser. Tel 1300 466 245

Picked up parts at the local dealer the other day not for a Prado though, the oil is on the front display shelf, not sure of the full specs but it starts as a 0w ??, ,not sure of the numbers or other specs maybe someone can post full specs from the manufacturers owners manual, castrol lubenet states refer dealer, some dpf requirements may not just necessarily mean drop a bottle of c3 in and she'll be right .

Unfortunately, ACEA A1/B1 is unsuitable for the 2.8 as it is aimed at older vehicles without any exhaust after treatment. ACEA C3 is aimed at sludge control, wear, DPF compatibility and more importantly fuel economy. Because of these requirements, the base oil used is more expensive and the additives required are usually sourced from a company that as a monopoly on it.

Many thanks brogers. Really appreciate the great advice. The pack actually also says recommended for many types...including "diesel multi valve fuel injected engines"... which would have led me to believe it was suitable. I am much enlightened by your info. Bought the Mobil1 to run in my new MX-5. Might look elsewhere for oil for the Prado.

It might be worth searching through the on-line oil selection guides for each of the major oil companies to see what they recommend as the appropriate oil for the 2.8 GD Prado that meets the manufacturer specs. Whilst the castrol site now lists the 2.8 GD Prado, unfortunately this is what it shows under the engine crankcase oil selection: "Refer to dealer"

                            http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/

                            *************
                            Crankcase
                            "Refer to Dealer"
                            Service Refill Capacity: 7.5* Litres.
                            *************

I wonder if that means castrol don't have an engine oil that meets the new Prado spec?

it might be worth a phone call to the Castrol oil selection advisor, as I would be sure that Castrol produce a synthetic oil that meets the ACEA C2 or C3 specification.

It looks like the oil capacity (including oil filter) has increased by 1/2 litre over the previous model as well....oil changes are going to be much more expensive, as oils that meet the require spec are more expensive and each oil change requires more oil than previous models.
