Many thanks brogers. Great information. I'm also on a learning curve re the DPF. I read the online owner's manual- burns off the soot when you drive above 60 km/hr. If you have been driving slowly and it starts building up soot, it gives a warning light asking you to drive at or above 60. It then raises the idle speed to try to do the job. If it blocks up badly, it puts up another warning light and goes into limp home mode- time to go to the dealer for a physical clean-out.

I really think many people, (not those on P point of course) don't realise the wide variation and potential confusion around engine oil selection...I know I was confused until several years ago...just look around the shelves at any auto store at the bewildering array of brands and types of engine oil, and it is very easy to get the wrong oil inadvertently. Its almost as if oil companies are trying to complicate and confuse folk somewhat...and even dealerships get confused. I have even had one dealership tell me "Its like Kentucky Fried Chicken. We get a base oil and add many 'herbs and spices' to get the grade of oil we require. Needless to say I don't go near that dealership anymore....but you must know what people are putting in your engine.

Engine oil selection and sale needs a 'shake up" from a consumer protection perspective. Probably the single most important item at most diesel engine services is the actual engine oil, and often you will have no idea whatsoever what someone has actually put in your engine unless you get the oil tested and analysed. Put the wrong oil in your new Prado and start watching the $$$$$ as you stuff your DPF etc...What I do now is always ring the Oil Selection specialist at the oil company and get advice directly from an oil selection expert. I will do that again soon. I used to purchase Caltex Delo 400 15W40 in 20 lire drums for my previous Prado from a bulk outlet. I can't use that oil in the new 2.8 GD Prado as it isn't DPF compatible. Many oils that are DPF compatible are only 5W30 grade, which may not be the best grade of oil in the middle of summer in Queensland, where temperatures get above 40 degrees...so I will do some research, make some phone calls and see what I come up with. Oils ain't oils!

At work we have two different oils that would be compatible depending on the weight specified for the 2.8. One of the best value oils available IMHO is from your holden dealer of all places. AC Delco 5W30 Dexos2 full synthetic, it's made by Fuschs and is the exact same oil sold by Isuzu for the Dmax, MUX and NLR. The other oil we use is Castrol Vection 15W40 semi-synthetic, it's low saps/low ash and we have been using it in Isuzu trucks for years now, some have almost 300,000Km with no issues. I use the Castrol oil in my Prado (1KD) as they run well on 15W40, the boss uses the Dexos2 in his Landcruiser as they seem to run better on a lighter oil (VDJ79).

For a new car I like the ideal of specifying (or providing) a known quality oil like Mobile 1 ESP, but it looks like about $120 for 8 litres = $240 pa = $720 over 3 years. The fixed price service is $220 each and I might guess the 'upgrade' to full synthetic Toyota Oil would be about $40 extra = $240 extra over 3 years. Does this seem right ?
(PS: the owner manual quotes C2 grade). I did also notice that Mobile 1 ESP seems to have the lowest ash level of a few I compared (?)

C2 is the fuel economy version of C3. C3 will give better wear protection. The fuel economy improvement between the two specs is a small percentage. I don't recall the exact number. It can be found on the Lubrizol website.

I'm new 2.8 owner too. I plan to supply my own engine oil to dealer for servicing. If i supply C3 and the manual quotes for C2, would this be possible to void my warranty. I totally agree with gxl_d4d, C2 just better fuel economy version of C3 but the downside is less protection.

I run Mobil Delvac ESP 15w40 in my 1KD, but I've read the specs on it, and you can use it with DPF engines. Its a good oil too.

Had my 2.8 in for it's 1000km "checkover" today. I asked them what oil they would be using for the 10,000km oil change. Service guy said that they would be using a "special low-ash, fully synthetic oil- needed to suit the DPF". Sounds like the right answer to me. I'll go with the dealer-supplied oil on the basis of that reply. I also explored the option of an oil and filter change for the 1000km "service". He reiterated that it was totally unnecessary, and would be a waste of oil. My 2.8 now has about 1400km on it. It seems to go quite a bit better than when I picked it up- like the engine is loosening up. How long will this loosening up process go on for, in other's experience ?

Yes I will stick with Toyotas oil, be on the safe side, just brought 8 litres of oil and a filter at the dealership and done a change, 1500km on it so far (they still have the four litre tins of oil that are made in Japan that they had to use before the Australian oil was made)

The Penrite ENVIRO+ DL-1 5W-30 (http://www.penriteoil.com.au/product...d_products=249) seems a good spec, has moderate pricing and easily found. Any views ?

The service manager at my dealer (Adelaide) explained that they are now using a specific fully-synthetic 5w-30 ACEA C2 oil for the 2.8 engine. I will check more details nearer the service time, but unless I spot an issue I will probably go with their oil (at least during the fixed price service period).

Stick with the Oil supplied by the dealer. why the hell would you want to try anything else and possibly void your warranty.

Are you on fixed price servicing with the dealers? If so, stick with what they supply. Far less drama should something go wrong. They will try every little loophole to get out of a warranty claim, trust me, been there done that when my engine blew at 73K. The manufacturer has spent a lot of time and money working out what oil works for their engine. Your choice in the end and the question is are you prepared to take the risk?
