  • Oil leaks on d4d

Guys, just had 4 year service done, 52000km on the clock. Have extended warranty.

    Toyota dealer picked up...
"Oil leak around front rocker cover noticed prior to removal" and
"Slight oil weep from timing cover and 2nd sump".

They have agreed that this will be covered by my extended warranty but have said that they would like to do it at the next service in September.

Does anybody foresee any long term problems? Should I wait until September?

The oil is under positive pressure so nothing should get in. Keep an eye on it and take it back before if the leak gets worse.
My thought process is that until oil starts hitting the ground then it's still ok to go.
Worst that will happen is your engine bay might get a bit messy but they should clean it up when they fix the leak.
Not being familiar with Prado warranty is it 60k or 100k warranty? If the next service is 60K and the warranty is for 60K I'd make sure that it's in writing that the leaks were noticed at 52k so they don't try pull a "this leak happened out of warranty"

Warranty is only 3 years so they are doing it under extended warranty, if it is written on paperwork then that is your proof that it is recorded before warranty expiration so you should be OK.

At only 13k a year you won't do many before September, unless you are planning a lap around the block over winter

Guys, just had the oil leaks done. Leaks on rocker cover, timing cover and 2nd sump. Have only done 57000 km with no had work. Regularly serviced as I am under extended 5 year warranty. Dealer has just done 54 month service, 1 day for service 2 days to fix leaks. They told me they allow 14 workshop hours and would've cost me $2000. They actually have to lift the engine out to do the work!

Lucky there was no charge under the warranty. Dealer has been pretty good, no arguments or hassles. Details attached.

This is leaving me pretty concerned that there is a problem with my engine. Do others think this might be the case?

Is this a known problem with the 150 series 3.0 Diesel engine? Have heard from others with older prados that they had had this issue. $1200 extended warranty has paid for itself.

Plan to get RAA to do warranty check prior to Toyota warranty expiring in march 17.

What the hell is the "2nd sump" never heard that before. I also find it hard to believe that they lifted the engine out to do the work, may be wrong but that is a hell of a lot of work if they actually had to.

I have never in my life heard of any car developing oil leaks so early on. It's definitely unusual. To say I'd be pissed would be an understatement. You shouldn't see any leaking oil until after 200,000km.
Maybe they'll disconnect the engine from the transmission because they're going to replace every gasket on the engine just incase some more are about to let go.
Never heard of a second sump unless they meant transmission sump. There will be no long term probs from small rocker cover oil leaks, or larger ones so long as you keep the oil up to it if it chews through it. There will just be a little bit of a mess from the leaks but the dealership should degrease it all during the repair anyway.
