CamJam yeah they've been top notch with the servicing side of things so here's hoping they are just as good when it warranty time.
ExToyota! - Oh what a feeling ;-)
Hows the the Y62 treating you? I imagine thats a gem of a motor - hope its not flogging your wallet senseless. Both of my Y61's were absolutely bulletproof and great trucks to live with as long as you didnt mind the truck like handling.
JohnLynn and Nudgebar - Yup I've been regularly keeping an eye on it and have seen absolutely nothing out of the ordinary with regard to burn frequency and temps. Never seen higher than 100% and seen as low as 4% with a burn that happened on the open road at 80-90km/h.
This is bothering me a lot more than it should. I'm back to the Simpson in July and hoping to do the CSR one day. The Prado's been a really good allrounder (which is probably why it gets labelled boring) but if I cant trust it to get me to the far end every damn time .......

DPF and white smoke

to my knowledge ( and not happened to me as yet ) , it starts with lower burn temps ( blocked 5th ) , then overfilling of the DPF , incomplete emptying of the DPF , and its all downhill from there.

Oh No I am surprised it has happened to your Prado as you were the first person on here to publish the soot % pid so I imagine you were on the ball with monitoring. Did you continue to monitor and has this happened without you noticing anything unusual? like lower exhaust temperatures or regens becoming more frequent or taking longer.

Mate, in Canberra you shouldn't have issues. Down in Lennock they know my car well and they're very responsive. Just takes a month or so to order the damn thing in if they have none in country. I've found them bloody good (so good I kept it far longer than I otherwise would have).Originally posted by ExNissan View PostAw sh*t,
40000km of trouble free, smoke free GX Prado love (6/2016) and in the space of a couple of weeks two instances of the cloud of white smoke on regen. In both cases the car had been turned off during a regen and then restarted cold later. The cloud lasted 15-30 seconds and was clearly visible in all 3 mirrors. At least the second instance did some public good - there's a P-Plater who may think twice before tailgating another Prado.
I'm visiting my friendly dealer to pick up some spares for a (fingers crossed) trip across the Simpson in July and I'll see what they say. Especially as it had just had its 40000 service a few weeks ago (just days before the first cloud of DPF death).
Damn.

Ive been told Toyota will replace the DPF even if out of warranty due to there being a problem with the DPF design. Until fixed they will continue to replace existing design. I recommend going fo aa drive and running at 100km/h in 3rd gear when a burn has commenced. I keep doing this and looks like my fuel consumption is getting better. Just need to get the DPF into the mid 700deg. Too often the DPF is only getting to sub 500's when driving in D at hwy speeds.Originally posted by jasaly01 View PostMy 2016 2.8 ltr Prado is coming up to 80,000 km over the last few weeks fuel consumption has jumped to 10.6/100 from 9.1/100 and is blowing a lot of white smoke, I bet toyota refuse to do anything about it because it is out of warranty. But I was thinking of getting rid of it because while I love my Toyota's I am sick of there bullshit after sales customer service. The car has a bad rattle coming from the front right hand side which at last service toyota said they couldnt replicate. Its a shame because this is my second new Prado and 4th new Toyota in 8 years.

Why is a 2016 with 80k out of warranty??

The thing is they call to see how the service went, voice the fact the items specifically
mentioned to be sorted never got fixed and they dance around then say when you bring it in next time ............

I am with you on after sales service, if they put in half the effort that they put into customer surveys into sorting out real issues then we wouldn't have many problems.
However surely your car is still under guarantee if it is a 2016? I would imagine that any dealer would jump at the chance to get Toyota to fund them changing your DPF if you tell them there is lots of white smoke. Please post what they say when you take it in.

Came back from my 7,000km trip to Uluru. The car only blew white smoke once when the engine wasn't hot enough in the morning. It seems DPF isn't causing any trouble on the highway at all. I didn't do any off-roading so can't comment on that. It did a regeneration this morning in the middle of a school run, surprisingly I didn't see any smoke and the burn finished in 12 km. I'm not sure if it is anything to do with my dash on M31 constantly at 120kph and above for 1 hour. I didn't intend to go over the speed limit, was simply following the traffic...Originally posted by CamJam View Post
Ah, yes. The reason I have just committed to purchasing another 4WD and took perhaps a $15K hit on it after less than two years. I just cannot trust it.
You most likely won't get a new DPF in time - they order them from Japan. However, what I did manage to confirm is that the DPF will have a limp-home mode so it shouldn't leave you fully stranded - and that if you disconnect the batteries for 30min after you shut it down (in the even it refuses to start as it know's it's DPF is Cactus) then you'll be able to fire it up again.
Funnily enough (not really funny) - it was that it was a similar trip to yours, through the Flinders to Alice then on to Uluru via the West Mcdonnell Ranges/ Finke Gorge that I was planning for this April as well. I had to can it (a month ago), because I was going to have family on board and I wasn't going to risk it. Having said that, mine has more than this as an issue and been off the road for weeks on end so it's a 'special case' - likely made as a practice run for production line workers at 6pm on a Saturday night before Mardi Gras in Japan.

Word is it the issue is injector related,
The angle and location, issues arising from that are as mentioned above.
Given the amount of complaints there are going to start receiving given the amount of 2.8s on the road, surly this will get addressed if not by Toyota but by the government.
Lets just hope it does not become too big of an issue to fix like the airbag saga.

Have heard people mention that the location of the 5th injector is possibly to blame? It is getting either blocked over or blocked open, causing limp mode or white smoke? You would think a massive company like Toyota would have all this sussed out before releasing a new engine to market. I've seen quite a few hilux's now putting up the smokescreen as they take off across intersections. It's not acceptable.
