Thanks Rob, I prime the aux filter only after installing it, all other times I use main filter primer...
I looked at your pics yesterday (posted ages ago) and noticed the fuel tank pipe had a bend path that took it above the filter before coming back down level with the filter, my mechanic mate had tied the excess fuel hose below the height of the filter, so yesterday arvo I re-routed the fuel hose back to the original path before connecting it to the aux filter. The car ran yesterday evening fine and started this morning with only a slightly longer than norm turn over.
    Next few days will tell.
Thanks for your assistance, will try you suggestion next weekend.

I suggest you go back to basic fault finding techniques, first off remove the Racor filter go
back to the standard setup and see if the problem dissapears.

Assuming it does then the problem is with the Racor filter, you could connect the racor to a compressor
and block the outlet and do a basic soapy water test for leaks. Otherwise check for leaks at the bleed
screw, check that the primer pump is correctly assembled and seals properly, and the blanking plug
      in the not used outlet.

      Cheers

Roo, so you reckon the blow by also causes piston failure as we have seen in at least 2 x 150's thus far on this forum?

I wouldn't bother. The flow rate and filtering efficiency is very low compared to somthing like the Racor R45S element.
You can get racor stuff from the States fairly cheaply. I think I paid a bit over $120.00 for my setup which filters out down to 2micron and has a flow rate of over 200l/hr. The stated filtering efficiency is 99.8% on this setup.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

I asked the local Service bloke down at the local Toyota Dealer about when do they change the Fuel Filter in the engine bay, considering they change the filter between the tanks every 20,000kms..... His reply was never, unless the warning buzzer sounds. This surprised me as the even the service books says to be done at the 80,000km mark...... Anyhow, I ended finally replacing my Racor 2nd Fuel Filter element that I installed b4 the OEM one. It had done 35,000kms (I've been a bit slack in changing it) and it was fairly well black when comparing it with the new replacment element.
So, my question is........... how can Toyota claim that u don't have to change it or only at every 80,000ks ?? Can only imagine what might have been if I hadn't had a 2nd Filter installed and this is only via filling up at name brand servo's or high turnover servo's...... What happens when u travel out west and fill up at some of those dodgy little towns..... if u have to that is......

John.... It's just a home made job. A bit of 45x3mm (I think) angle iron cut to length. It's attached to the OEM bracket. I was also going to use another support closer to the firewall for extra support but haven't gotten around to it yet. There's a captive nut there waiting to be used..... Is that the info u were after?

On the genuine filter, change out every 50,000 to 60,000 kms, only if you have a decent pre filter. I am not using the genuine fuel filters anymore because they are to expensive. I am using the Bosch brand now but if your under warranty still use the genuine filter. The Bosch fuel filters are the same rating as the genuine filters.
The 80,000 km thing is just plain stupid Rob, and imagine what the genuine filter would be like if you didn't have the pre filter at that sort of mileage. If you are operating under normal conditions change out the genuine fuel filters every 20,000 kms because of the cost. That's if you don't have a secondary filter system. $57.00 each trade price now. Things have got really silly at Toyota Parts now I reckon. I know in the past I have said that you should change them out every 10,000 kms, but they just have become to expensive.
When you change your Racor filter make sure you fill the bowl and the filter with clean diesel fuel before you install it on the head. That way, it gets rid of a lot of air left in the system. Always prime from the genuine head.

I was quoted $119 ea for the genuine Toyota filter. Shock! and to only change them when the light comes on!!!! shock, shock.

                        • Diesel Care in Qld have Fuel Manager units with bracket kits for most models Prado 150 inc.
These are high flow rated and can be supplied as primary or secondary filters.
Fitting instructions on their web page looks simple

Thats a great call by Mr Toyota...

I have a water filter/water separator before the Toyota filter. The Toyota filter gets binned every 10,000 km.

When the 'alarm' goes on, the filter is blocked is too late.

                              • Hi John. When you say you have changed some of your thinking, what Racor filter do you now recommend as a pre filter. A 10 micron or 2 micron?
                                Cheers........Wayne
