  • They should have done wheel balance on the front Tyres when they fitted them to the front. It may be the rears out of balance ?? Has the vehicle being doing some towing or some time just idling ?? 15.8 L per 100 at the start is roughly petrol economy when running around town.Maybe with some more cruising it will drop down more ?? The only true way of checking economy is filling both tanks full, do your running around taking note wether it's all start stop city driving or freeway or both then fill tank/a back up to the full again and then work it out from there to get true figures..... Cheers Steve

    • Should mention also cruise won't have anything to do with vibration. If you did 80k with just using the throttle without cruise you would find the vibration would still have been there (I'd be pretty certain of that) try it again next time your out n about. Also cruise in Toyotas I find is fine on flat roads. Anything with hills crests etc I find the cruise will use more fuel as it hunts around too much and not a nice and gentle control if the throttle compared to just using the pedal with your foot. I have found this with current Prado and the last two as well.... This will help economy as well as I run my Tyres on 42 psi all round when not off road.... Cheers Steve

      • I have a 2010 Auto GXL, which has done 138,000kms.
Toyota claim that it should do 10.6l/100km around town. I have nearly emptied my last tank which was pretty much all done around town and the ODO shows nearly 900kms. The tank was filled at the last fuel up.
Now my trip computer says since last fuel up I'm getting 14.2.
So......my question is.....IS it fair to assume that my 3" lift, Copper ST MAXX tyres and all the extra weight from Bull bar, rear drawers, dual batteries etc, adds approx. 3-3.5 l/100km??(depending on trip computer accuaracy?)
2010 Auto GXL Metal Storm, 2" king spring lift, TJM Bull Bar, TJM 9500lb winch, LF Genesis 55W HIDs, Cooper ST MAXX tyres, ARB Compressor, Uniden 80 Ch UHF, Dual batteries, RedArc BCDC 1220 charger, RedArc electric brake controller, Electronic rust proofing, MSA seat covers, Roof DVD player, Rhino Pioneer tray, Jack Mount, Cargo barrier, Ironman drawers, Glind heat exchange shower, rear twin 12V plugs, Anderson plug, Hayman Reese towbar

To give you an idea of what I'm getting...

I have a 2010 GX (7 seater) manual, roof rack (tiger11 so not the smallest rack around), powerful4x4 rocksliders (with brush rails), ARB bulbar, tow ball, dual battery. Off 130L got 1039km. Avg 12.51L/100km..but on the dash it's saying I'm getting 10.9L/100Km, which isn't true.

So I reckon the weight is a huge contribution to the Avg fuel economy...figures don't lie.

          • Thanks for the info, I wish my dash said 10.9l/ 100km, at least then I'd have the option to live in denial and hope I was getting close to that. I'd actually be stoked with 12.5l/100km. Anyway I'll do the proper calculations next tank using the Road Trip Lite App and see what it is actually returning. My main concern is that there isn't some underlying injector issue adding to poor fuel consumption. It would be great to collate all the consumption data for people with a similar series of mods (bars, dual batts, roof racks etc) and see what the average real world figure is.

            • I have February 2012 diesel Altitude. Mostly City travel. Computer says 10.3 ltr / 100km. Checked last years figures based on fuel docket volumes & actual odometer readings. Average for year was 10.8 ltr/100km based on 16000 km. I'm a bit anal when refuelling, going very slow to alleviate foaming. Couple of times have gone to high flow pump & can get 20 litres less in tank compared to filling slowly. This can affect calculated consumption significantly. Did couple weeks travelling up SE Freeway to Mt Barker, consumption down to between 8.5 - 9.0. Very happy with performance.

Dr Air Pro 150 ltr air compressor. ARB 60 ltr fridge. GME 3550s UHF radio. Hema HX1.

Would I be right in assuming your vehicle is mainly "stock"?

                • After about 4000km dash is on 8.9l and my back calcs are indicating around the same. Havent seen any real increase since putting tjm bar and sidesteps on. Its about to get lift and tyres so expect at least 1l increase but will wait and see.

                  Car is GX Manual.

Yep, have not done any modifications, no bull bar or suspension, stock standard. Recently had ecu upgrades. Driving in D around town now feels like old S4. No lag. A bit early to really tell but think consumption might have gone up 0.2 litre/100km with ecu upgrades.

                    • Recent return trip form Sydney to Gundagia 9.1 according to the trip computer. Confirmed as 9.5 at next fill up. Given that there was some city driving before I refilled I would tend to agree with the trip computer's figures. This confirms my belief that the trip computer's numbers are accurate for country driving but not in the city where it tends to read 1-1.5l/100km on the low side e.g. typical city consumption is around 11.5-12 and the trip computer states 10.5-11

                      • When my Prado was standard, over approx. 7 months (9 fills), I averaged 9.1.

Added a steel bar, 2" lift and duel battery, over approx. 4 months (4 fills), I averaged 10.1.

Changed the Grandtreks to 265/70 MTZ's and over the last 19 months (28 fills), I average 11.2

None of these figures are from the on board computer but actual fuel receipts.

Very rarely do I use anything but standard BP diesel and the driving is a mix of city, highway and a reasonable amount of off road.

                        • Something interesting that has happened with my 2010 VX. Car was bought from an older couple who bought it new, did a trip around Aus with a medium camper and then went for a Landcruiser as they wanted a larger camper. I got the car with the only mod being electric brakes.
Now the interesting part. Freeway figures since I have gotten the car average close to 10L/100km with just myself or passenger. Twice now I have had the car fully loaded with passengers, full boot, roof cage attached and box trailer and am reading 2-2.5l/100km less fully loaded than with an empty car?????

Has anyone else experienced better economy with additional weight? The only thing I can think of is that the car had a decent camper attached from day one and the motor has 'run in' with a 2tonne camper on the back until it got to me.

                          • I've got a new Kakadu and just hit 10,000kms. From when i got the car it was around the 10.8L. I told them it was a bit high and they said it would drop as it gets run in but it is still around the same. slightly disappointing from them stating around the 8.5L on specs

3 of my mates have the same car and they're getting an extra 400kms/tank

                            • I have a 2011 GX now with 112xxxkm. I've had it since 91xxxkm. I have an ARB winch bar, IPF spotties and now roof racks. It averages 10.5L/100km according to the dash readout but with the Dinkum Logbook App its actually up at 11.1L/100km.

When purchased I had a towbar installed. Which makes me happy as no one has ever abused it while towing before I owned it. It was a cop car though so may have been abused in other ways.

The first big test towing was to Canberra this year for Summernats towing my mates Commodore on a trailer. He didn't want to foot the bill by towing it in his 4.5L Petrol Patrol at 26-30L/100km.

The Prado did so well! Didn't even notice the car was there unless going up hill and even then it maintained speed. I actually freaked out at one point pulling into a servo an hour from home, I thought there was someone tailgating right up my arse! That was a good laugh.

Anyway, Prado went awesome! I wasn't driving conservative either, getting the SH**S with slow drivers on the way home and overtaking them and sitting on 110km/h as much as possible. Once back I went and filled up and was once again broke.

The golden figure for the entire trip was 16.53L/100km! Very happy with that. With all the crap we had loaded in both cars for the weekend I would've been very close to GCM.

I honestly have no idea how they come up with these figures when advertising cars, is that when they're rolling down a steep hill continuously and not applying power?

                              • my car's av consumption readout has stayed bang on 9.4l/100 since about 4,000ks (just under 9,000k now, manual diesel) with a mix of weekday sydney cbd commute and w/end country drives. the arb kit has done diddly to the consumption although we haven't towed yet. filling up is now a novelty...

                                damn i love this car!
