Hi there, this is the thread/post with photo.

I will actually show the dealership tomorrow, as the car will be in for service.

I think there may be a few possible "rattle" causes, all discussed on Pradopoint, but this is definately one of them.

    Cheers,

    Fred

    • Hi People,
had my new D4D now since June 30 this year.
Traded my 05 120 series petrol for this. Love the car but don't think its in quite the same class as the earlier model.
No rattles, but the dreaded vibration annoys the crap outa me! have tried different things, with some improvement, but seems to come back. I did Kryptos guard lining, that made a little difference, but not enough for me. It is definitely the airbox vibrating. I took the 3 mounting bolts out and sat it on a piece of foam and no vib at all. one thing i tried which work fantastic was to remove the bolts and silicone the rubbers to the box and to the vehicle. Made heaps of difference, however the silicone isn't strong enough and eventually comes loose. I think a fix would be to fabricate a soft mount, push fitted to the box and then attached to the car. This should absorb most of the vibration.
until TMC come up with a solution, i think i will keep playing and see if i can fix it myself. Snorkel is on the cards, so maybe an improvement when its done.
      Love the posts.
      cheers

      • Not sure if you have had a look at this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-is-best/page7. The post describing removal/ replacement of the catalytic converter looks like a possible solution to the vibration. For me the vibration of the airbox, mudgard, etc all are all produced by the engine harmonics in that 1400-1800 rev range. Changing the exhaust back pressure could be the answer. A few people who have changed mufflers are reporting losing the vibration. I noticed while running some cleaner through the intake, that the engine struggles to run smoothly through this rev range. You can test this yourself, just use your hand to push down the throttle very slowly from idle to 2000 rpm. I'm not talking about any rattles, ive fixed those, put in Dynamat etc. Its the vibration that i want to get rid of. As soon as funds allow i'm of to get a Hi Flow Cat installed. Less keen on changing the muffler, like to keep it quiet and original looking. For what its worth my car has done 80,000 and the vibration isn't getting any better.

        • I haven't had time yet to read all 20 pages of this topic but my Feb 2012 VX D4D had the same vibration at 1500 rpm. The Toyota dealer agreed it was there but blamed it on "engine harmonics" and said as yet there was no fix for it. After a couple of months I had a dual battery system fitted and the vibration immediately changed and had 95% gone and is no longer noticable. Must have been the extra weight of the second battery on the guard. It's not reallya fix for the cause of the problem but it is no longer an issue for me.

            • Had my 30,000km service yesterday and the dealer installed a Technical Field Fix. It has only become available from last Thursday 29th Nov apparently. It involves remounting the air filter element box. Vibration and induction 'boom' reduced by about 80% at 1500-1900 RPM. Yay!

                        • My local dealer removed the flexible connector between the air box and the inner mudguard to overcome the vibration problem. It does get rid of the vib. He claims that it is No 2 on the official Toyoya "fix it" list with No 1 being the removal of the plastic bit by the windscreen and No 3 being changes to the inner mudguard area.
Has anybody else had this part removed? I am concerned about the taking of air from the engine compartment rather than cooler air from the mudguard and I want the dealer to replace the part but they are reluctant to do it for me saying that it is a Toyota fix. But is it???
                          What do others think??

Fix no.1 only fixes one of the rattles caused by the vibration/resonance
Fix no.2 sounds dodgy, and still won't change the resonance of the intake chamber. The reason for this is that they are not changing the characteristics of the air intake chamber, the space under the mudguard. At best they are removing a source of rattles caused by the vibration.
Fix no.3 fixes the vibration/resonance, as does fitting a snorkel. This is because both these fixes change the characteristics of the air intake chamber which changes the resonant frequency.

                            Hope that all makes sense.
