  • DPF Statistics, 0-10,000Km

Thanks to members on the Fortuner Forum I was able to program my Scangauge II to read DPF sensors (trying to get a copy of Techstream tho).
Here are some DPF stats for 0-10,000Km on my 2018 GXL Prado:

    Mileage Breakdown:
    a. 3,000Kms on the open highway (100-110Kms/hr),.
    b. 400Kms desert tracks including 300+ sand dunes (0-15-40Kms/hr).
    c. The rest city driving.

    DPF regens at highway speeds.
Average Kms to complete a full regen = 70Kms
Regens often ended at 4% and some at 0%

DPF regens for city driving/desert tracks:
Average Kms to complete a full regen = 21Kms
    Regens ended at 6%

Continuous (not interrupted) regens city driving/desert tracks:
Average Kms to complete a full regen = 14Kms

    Interrupted regens city driving:
Average Kms to complete a full regen = 25Kms
Average Kms to warm-up and resume the DPF regen after interruption(parked overnight etc) = 5-8Kms

    DPF Temperatures:
in the high 500 Degrees C for the first 50%+ of the burn
in the mid-high 600 Degrees C for the last phase of the burn

    General:
    a . Overall economy = 8.7 Ltrs/100Km
    b. Total number of full DPF regens = 28
    c. Average Kms between full regens = 353Kms
    e. Idle revs increased to around 900 rpm during the burn
    f. the burn continued whilst at stop lights
    g. a burn resumed when interrupted by switching the engine off (eg parking at work or home overnight)

    Notes:
    a. occasionally the DPF saturation % would drop a little whilst on the way up (mostly during highway driving).
    b. an odd occurrence in the city following a burn, the DPF % increased from 6% to 24% in less than 15Kms. The next day whilst driving DPF % grew to 28% and then dropped to 16% (????)
    c. looks like short trips of less than 5-8Km (maybe a little more) won't produce the conditions for the DPF to complete a burn. This is how long its taken to warm the system up after a shutdown.
    d. A DPF burn went just fine during a 200Km crawl over 300+ sand dunes along the Googs desert track!

Interesting stats mate and though i havent recorded mine that sounds similiar except mine burns around every 275kms in city driving.

Since I had the most recent ECU update for the DPF my burns are completing MUCH quicker that before - two of them so far have completed in under 10kms. One finished after 7kms of 70km/h!

I thought the frequency might change also but it still burns around in the 260 - 300 km range,
    Cheers
    Micheal.

Yes interesting data from both of you thanks for posting, wonder if you get the forum dreaded error message like I do after posting?

Techstream version 13 is available now, make sure you get the correct lead though.

My Prado wont have the "update" for a while yet, several months but thought it may be worth comparing your new figures with my old ones:

      General:
      a . Overall economy = 8.7 Ltrs/100Km I would say this is very good
      b. Total number of full DPF regens = 28 Didn't count mine!
      c. Average Kms between full regens = 353Kms My average distance was around 300Km between regenerations but only ever took around 30 Km on freeway.
      e. Idle revs increased to around 900 rpm during the burn I have a manual which increases to 1200 rpm and irritates me when reversing boat into garage trying not to disturb the neighbours at night.
      f. the burn continued whilst at stop lights Yes but before the mod the continued burn was time limited, cant remember how long for though sorry.
      g. burns resumed when interrupted by switching the engine off (eg parking at work or home overnight) Yes still the same resumed after engine reached operating temperature.

      Notes:
      a. occasionally the DPF saturation % would drop a little whilst on the way up (mostly during highway driving). Normal behaviour % seems to "reset" itself without reason.
      b. an odd occurrence in the city following a burn, the DPF % increased from 6% to 24% in less than 15Kms. The next day, whilst driving, DPF % grew to 28% and then dropped to 16% (????) Yes exactly what used to happen as well, no idea why, service manager denied it happens, no wonder I have little faith in the dealership!

My 2017 gxl does a DPF burn every 200km while in the city, is this normal? I noticed it could travel more than 350km before a burn starts after a long free way run.

Depends on your fuel usage. Toyota use an algorithm but 200km sounds a bit short to me. Should be around 260 to 320 based on fuel consumption. I ave 10l/100km and get a burn about every 287km.

Maybe a stupid question but, how do one normally know if it's doing a burn during driving? Cos while driving it's hard to see if the rev is a little bit up, so I'm not sure if there is a way to know it's doing a burn?

Not a stupid question at all, I would say that there is really no way that it is obvious that a regeneration is happening unless you are monitoring with something like scan gauge or torque pro or (even more trouble) a laptop running Techstream.
When stationary (only) the idle rpm is raised to 900 auto and 1200 on a manual, I have always presumed but do not know that this is because if an auto idled any faster it would want to move forward in drive and need more brake effort to stop it and of course heat up the transmission oil.

Some came from work published on the Fortuner forum, and some come from the Scangauge suppliers website.

You can find them at 'Engine - Diesel (150 Series)' branch. The link is:
