  • How to improve (reduce) diesel usage

I recently started another thread about what is the "actual" usable volume of the diesel tank and how much usable diesel is left in the tank once the fuel light comes on.

During the course of that discussion i learnt that my economy is worse then others which is prompting to to look into it further.

My current usage is 13L/100km and my driving style and also the routes i take are tame with no real hills or traffic. Much of my driving is the 20km each way to and from work with much of it at 100km/h in light traffic.

My vehicle is a 2014 GXL auto diesel with about 85,000km on the dial. Car is regularly serviced by toyota and in good condition
I have some mods and other things that are not going to be helping my economy. These are:
    Larger tyres 265/70/17
All terrain tyres (getting a droning noise but not as bad as muddies but must be adding some rolling resistance
2in lift (more air to move and more resistance through CV's and Uni)
    bullbar
roofrack with awning on one side and fishing rod tube on the other
smart alternator function off for full charging of auxiliary battery
    fridge always running
based in Darwin so AC always flat out
    high ambiant temps reduce efficiency.

Anyway, over the next few months i will make some changes and see if i get better results. Any suggestions are welcome as to what to try, however i am not going to be doing the big things like change out the springs and tyres until they are shagged out.

For the past 2 weeks I have removed the thingy in the fuse box which is meant to stop the smart alternator from doing its thing returning it to normal and have removed the fridge as the extra fridge space was required for storing too much christmas food. Net result - no measurable improvement.

For the next 2 weeks i have upped the tyre pressure from 38psi to 41psi and i will get some sensor cleaning spray and give that go.

I always run 40psi in the highway and around 45 in the rear if towing. Also, economy is much better cruising at around 2000rpm, which is 80kph for me in top gear.

      Roof rack eats fuel.
Larger diameter tyres too, you’ll notice a huge improvement back on standard tyres especially acceleration.
Finally do real sums. Your larger tyres will upset the odometer and factory speedo is also way out. Hard to compare apples to apples unless you level the playing field.

last fill was 84.47L and distance was 563km giving 15l/100km.

allowing for the 70 profile tyres gives 14.5L/100km. there was some towing of a trailer and a kilometers of beach so will leave as is for another tank to get a better idea of what its doing.

next change will be greasing all points i can get to on the drive train.

Only thing to grease is the prop shafts. Won't do much for you, economy wise.
Might just have to live with it.

Maybe check your handbrake hasn't been over adjusted. Sometimes the mechanics get a bit carried away and it doesn't take a lot to knock back performance.

"Car is regularly serviced by toyota", this could cause issues too
D4D. How long will it last?

                  any induction whistle

                  eg loose intake plumbing

maybe need the Italian tune up? drive it like you stole it for a bit?

Something that definitely effects consumption is the build up of oil deposit soot in the intake manifold due to the EGR. I got mine blocked (ECU) at 100k and the build up was already quite bad. It's easy to have a look to see how bad yours is.

I have roof rack, lift, a/t tyres, and those things definitely effect fuel consumption but I still get around 12l/100 average around town. Tyre pressures and the roof rack are big consumers, and you run 70s which is a known impact. I run 40psi around town, and 45 on the highway. On my annual long run up north towing a heavy camper I run 45 front and 52 rear. Also check your air intake and your air filters.

Also the 15l/100 doesn't really count as a true average figure if you were towing and did some 4WD work.

Can you tell me how to check for build up in the intake? Is there an easy part to remove for inspection? Does it need a borer-scope? Pretty sure i can borrow one from work.

                      as for other comments,

                      no induction whistle
Handbrake barely works so not over tightened
driven quite gently in my opinion.

This tank should be pretty standard driving, however there is 1 trip to the tip towing a box trailer (say 30km) and 1 trip with the camper for its rego check (say 40km)

I too am disappointed with fuel usage:

                        Dual Battery
                        ARB front bar
                        Rear tow bar
Low profile Rhino Rack roof bars on Rhino feet
                        Live in Port Macquarie

Summer town trips see mid to high 13l/100Km
Winter town trips see mid to high 11l/100Km
Highway usually 10l/100Km, goes up a tad if I do 110Km/h

The short town trips in summer with air con are my killer, highway is not terrible but I would have expected 9l/100Km.
The best I have ever seen on the trip computer is high 6l/100Km, that was an extended period of roadworks limited to 80Km/h. However, I refuse to do 80Km/h on a highway with a 110 limit, that figure was a one off & has never been repeated.

I have given up on trying to get what other members report. With what I consider reasonable usage and driving style I just can't achieve figures better than mine.

For this tank i did 764km fusing 105L giving 13.7L/100km. Compensating for larger tyres brings it to 13.3L/100km, so there has been some improvement with the small things done.

I will try taking off the roof rack this tank to see the difference, not expecting much as i only have the crossbars with an awning on once side and a tube that holds fishing rods on the other - no basket.

Just to compare, my 95 series V6 gives a consistent 16ltr/100, she has 250 000 Klm on the clock. That’s with, steel bull bar, steel roof rack with awning, 2inch lift, 265/60 R18 AT’s, 2 sets of draws loaded to max, seats up with tool bags in place. All up loaded with gear 420kg. Add fuel to that. Best Ive got is 15.65ltr/100. I always fill to the inlet flaps so I get an accurate reading.
Unfortunately diesels aren’t what the used to be.
