  • Excessive Fuel Consumption- 15l/100k

Hi all, I have a 2017 VX Prado which is very heavy on fuel, about 14.5-15 L per 100k (actual) allowing for highway and around city driving. Off road varies depending on conditions so ignoring that. Have put on KO2 tyres, snorkel, bull bar, UVP and duel batteries which will affect fuel consumption but way over everyone else I know with similar mods and more than a mate with beefed 200 Sahara with a lead foot! I have raised it with local dealer and they have conducted tests, took it up with Toyota Australia who raised it with local dealer so that went nowhere. A manual DPF was installed by Toyota but that does not help reduce fuel consumption. Have been really happy with it off road, Cape York etc but peeved off every time I fill up. Have had satisfaction in talking two work colleagues out of buying a Prado and I went for a Ford Everest for a work car instead of another Prado so that is three sales missed by Toyota. All Toyota say is that the fuel consumption “is probably somewhere within the tolerances they would expect”, what a crock of ……

Wary of doing anything to jeopardise warranty but if anybody out there has any suggestion please let me know on Prado Point, in the meantime I will continue to bag out Toyota Australia and their extremely poor customer service.

Can you swap tyres with a mate running conventional A/T tyres.
That seems the only item that might raise fuel usage.
Your L per 100 are quite a way off the printed figures from Toyota's own brochures.
And yes worse than my son's 200 series.

The only thing that stands out as a possible reason is your tyres, have you go up a size or two? If so, what size KO2 are you running?

Most likely a sensor is giving false readings to ECU and engine is being overdosed with fuel. Look into your EGR unit.

Is there EGR in 2017 Prado? I thought it has DPF.

Both, and to make the original poster feel worse my 2015 GXL manual returns an average of 8.5 L per 100 on mixed use including some towing but hardly any off road. Pleased you are doing your best to keep Toyota honest, my experience trying to get something done about the locked down and out of date head unit made me realise that they treat their customers (sorry guests) with disdain once they have your money.

Maybe try a tune mate. I have tuned my 2018 Auto GXL and the best I get from it is 8.1L per 100km. Over xmas I drove up north and got just over 1500kms from a full tank. Check my build thread for fitted parts. Proof below.

                    Bad DPF partially blocked maybe?

Interesting picture of the console? What are all those things visible in the background?

I’m having a twin gauge pod made to suit the cluster, so it’s been out of the car for awhile. Once completed I will post up.

I have been on a few long journeys recently with short trips in between, I covered 1400 Km from squeezing in as much diesel as I could, gauge was down to a quarter, filled up with 99 litres which works out at 7.2 L/100 km. I think this is what Toyota claim for a manual so quite pleased I managed it.

Some impressive figures there. Is everyone sure of actual k's covered? Toyota Speedo typically reads at least 5% high.
I'm happy when I see 8 but 9 is more common.
Good thing is she doesn't vary from around 10 when towing.
Speedo on mine is spot on too, win.

I don't usually go to the trouble of resetting the trip between buying diesel but this time I did, however on checking the long term average shown on the clock it is still 8.5 so something is wrong somewhere. My speedo reads high by around 5% as well. I normally drive around with Igo maps on which gives the GPS speed more accurately and of course announces when I am over the speed limit. I hope that I haven't posted misleading information, I will keep an eye on it and post the figure after the next refill.
