I am reading seemingly almost convincing reasons why one should use a thicker oil than the Toyota spec. ie generally higher atmospheric temperatures in Australia and perhaps a heavily working engine. Then I am thinking, my car's engine cooling system works well because it rarely moves above 86-87 C. I have seen the temperature at 88C for few minutes. I have been towing 2.6T caravan during temperatures ~35C. So I am thinking, how much higher is the oil temperature than the engine temperature? If your engine temperature does not run at "over hot" temperatures for long periods, do you really need an oil with a spec for a higher temperature range? Though, I question Toyota's temperature spec range myself.

Once again, my experience only. Coolant temps maintained 85c while oil temps were reaching 110c. Wakefield park especially due to the short style circuit. Its not just heat it needs to cope with, also the shear film strength on the bearing journals and bearings.
Diesels run high combustion force aswell compared to a petrol engine.
Im not saying that the oem spec oil isnt good, just saying that not one oil spec will cover all the situations.Last edited by Mike-B; 22-05-2020, 11:38 PM.
