Re: Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

I've just had mine in for its 20,000 km service and I mentioned it to the dealer. They sent a test driver out with me and when the problem happened, he said that they all do that. I replied that it's still a fault which needs to be addressed but he said that it was the auto transmission protecting itself from the changedown. What a load of sh*t!.

Mike, tell them that it is dangerous as it can hesitate during an overtaking manoeuvre and that they need to lodge a DPR. That response is a disgrace.....if the trany was 'protecting itself' then why can I down shift manualy in S mode?

Re: Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

I have a GXL that we picked up in Aug last year, its had the flat spot since day one(funny it never happened in the test drives I had), when I notice it the most is, rolling into a round about or a corner then accelerating around or out of the bend. At the 10,000 I took the head mechy for a spin and he said its the auto not noing what youre going to do, because you have rolled along and the auto thinks youre going to brake and stop, when you accelerate its confused on what it should, this he put down to no kick down cable and it being electronic, and my reply was that for seventy odd thou, cable or not, I dont expect a flat spot, he has logged the problem but said nothing will happen until they get enough complaints. At 14,000 I took it back because it happened when I was towing my boat and got to an over taking lane and put the foot down to get going and even the passengers could'nt beleive how long the flat spot lasted. Again took the mechy for a spin and after a drive and a chat said he still put it down to the auto not noing what it was doing and has logged it again. 20,000 service coming up soon and I'm just slightly _issed off. Stay tune for the fireworks, Warrnambool Tojo see you soon.....

Re: Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

          Guys....

I've watching this with interest as we have a Nov '10 model..... The missus usually drives the car and has said something similar but when I've driven it, I think it's only happen once or so & that was coming out of a round-about & I was driving sedately & applied the right foot slowly when I noticed a bit of hesitation... like the auto/computer was trying to makes its mine up whether to shift down a gear or not.....
Since then I've tried to reproduce it and can't really.... but what I thought it was related to was maybe the position of the throttle in relation to speed, etc. Now what I did do is apply more right foot on the accelerator when taking off or coming out of a round-about until the revs are over this apparent 2400rpm mark then ease off and to date there's been no problem (I mucked around trying different speeds, etc & doing this in bare feet gave me more of a feel for things)..... but we head off on a touring holiday towing a van soon, so that will be a good time to try things out.....

It is only what I've tried doing but by applying more foot on the accelerator for that short time until it gets past the 2400rpm mark(then easing off), so far seems to be working...... am I just kiddin myself or has others found this out as well???

Well I have to say, I am really glad to see all of these posts, not because it's happening bout because my local dealer practically told memthat I was imagining things.
I'm booking in for the 20,000 next week and will be telling them up front that I'll be logging a DPR.
As previously stated, for a car of this value, it is simply not good enough and they'll certainly know that once I'm done.

I had another play with this issue on the weekend. My initial thoughts on a hesitation downshifting from 4th to 3rd were wrong as it does it when in 3rd as well. The plot thickens unfortunately.

Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

Hi guys, having a V6 150 which doesn't have this issue I feel for you. Not good enough on an expensive car. Considering the V6 doesn't seem to have it (at least not in mine), and they all have the same transmission, it must come down to software within the transmission being different between the engines??? Be interesting to see if other V6 owners have the issue. Perhaps it just magnified due to the slight turbo lag that comes with a turbo diesel???

In any case, why not try setting up a petition. I did this for the midflap issue and who knows whether Toyota actually read it but it provides good proof of how many vehicles are affected. I used www.ipetitions.com which is free to setup.

                    Good lick.

I have been watching the posts on this issue as my 2010 Prado has the same issue from day one. Firstly, cutting out when going through a roundabout or turning left or right. At 10,000 km service the service manager came for a spin and the Prado cut out going up a steep incline and told me that it was the gearbox deciding what gear it was going to go into???? Now heading up to 20,000 kms, the (HOTS, heap of Toyota shit) still cuts out in roundabouts, up hills, and is dangerous in traffic as when I change lanes and accelerate it cuts out before accelerating. Sorry chaps but this is my second Prado and it will be my last. I don't like donating hard earned cash to a company that continues to cruise on efforts done years ago with the 80 and 100 series vehicles.

So I had my 150 D4D in for it's 20,000 today and I made plenty of noise about the flat spot. Whilst the reponse I got was what I had expected, I did at least get them to lodge a DPR (dealer problem report) and after a little persuasion they admitted to me that there have been a few others come in with the same problem.
I have no idea where this will end up, but for now they can only say that it is "normal". At least if the reports keep coming in, there is some home of something being done about it.

Re: Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

Well, Just got back form a 5500km trip around NSW-ViC towing our 16foot van.... This is the 1st time that I've continuously driven the Prado as it's usually the missus car.... There was only one point I think that the car hesitated with regards to the gear selection but other than that it was fine..... but I did drive it like a manual and manually selected gears when traveling up/down hills. I did push the car hard with the van on & found myself constantly having to ease off the accelerator due to going way over the speed limit. On avg I got around 15.9ltrs/100kms with the van on which I thought wasn't too bad considering the hilly terrain we were driving through....
I was curious though as to whether it's good (or not) for the AUTO driving it like a Manual when going up / down hills......

I had our 150 in for the 20,000 km service on Wednesday and after a heated discussion with service personnel the decision was made to reset the computer back to factory settings. I picked the 150 up on Thursday and so far so good. I have only travelled 70 kms but have found it more responsive and (touch wood) no cutting out. The dealer still feels that I am the problem and should look at the advancement Toyota makes towards a more refined mode of transport. I nearly spewed. hahhaaa

I've been pursuing this issue with Toyota for over a year now. After a lot of denying, a couple of months ago they formally acknowledged the problem (being the automatic transmission) through correspondence. They have taken recordings of the problem three times now and have sent it to Japan (via Melbourne) for a fix - so they say. The word I'm getting from the Toyota reps is that they may fix the problem and if they do, it'll be a while coming.

I've always stuck with Toyota for work cars, but the quality of the new Prado seems to have dropped along with Toyota's after sales service. It's been a poor experience to-date.

Until Toyota fix this problem, I'd stay away from the diesel auto.

Sheesh...here we go again... looks like another injector thread starting! I too have the flat spot... noticeable coming out of roundabouts when you get on the gas... it takes a while to think... then kicks down a gear. Noticeable enough for the passengers to get a push forward in the seat ..and ask... "whats that? " Car is in for 20K service today... notified to the dealer... but i bet when i collect today... nothing will be found...

Also have the transmission temp light coming on when towing my 1600kg van on level ground.... the dealer says the car has a transmission cooler.... HAS IT???? If so... it doesnt seem to work.... OR the light is optimistic. Expecting nothing from the dealer of course... so expecting i will be back posting regularly again ! ahhh the fun of it all!
