The TSV dealer washed my car as part of the service even though it was washed and polished the day before and was obviously the shiniest car in the service lot. They did a 4 wheel rotation which meant I had to do the spare when I got home. The good news about that place is that most of the time I get the car back when I want it and often I hang around shopping in Domain or Pro Tackle for a couple of hours. I will pursue this further with them as it gets closer to the 40k. If anyone has had a 40k service with them AND they have done the proper job, please let the rest of us know how you got them to do it.

I checked the book the day before I took mine in for the 40k to confirm that the tappets would be checked. Unfortunately I presumed that it would be done by the book. I called them on the way home in the afternoon and was told that they listened to them and they didn't need to be done. WRONG ANSWER!!. He told me that from their experience they never needed to be done and that I would need to leave it overnight to get them done, they never even gave me the option to leave it when I booked. He tried to argue the point, when told he would never win the argument with me because he was arguing with a mechanic.
The argument for them not needing to be done because they "sound ok" is a load of crap. Valve clearances don't always get bigger causing noise, the old days of rockers and rocker shafts, yes, they had a lot more parts to wear. With shim and bucket set ups like the D4D there is less to wear making them rattle, there is however the possibility of valve recession which will close the gap. I work for a Diesel engine company, valve recession is not uncommon. Chances are they probably may not need to be done but at least they should check, after all, Toyota put it in the schedule for a very valid reason.
In the long run, I took the car back, again, they gave me a free car and $100.00 fuel voucher for my inconvenience.
My recommendation is to make sure that they are going to check the clearances, don't take "the sensory method" as an option, unless you're pretty sure your dealer has a reliable crystal ball.2011 White GXL Diesel, ARB Sahara bar, Lightforce Genesis, ARB under bonnet compressor, Dual Batteries, GME TX3540

Had the 40k service done on my Prado before Christmas and requested the valve clearances be checked. I know they were checked as I now have a leaking tappet cover.
The dealer has tried twice so far to fix the leak and it goes back again next week. Each time they have looked, the leak has been on one of the rear corners of the tappet cover. They have not driven the Prado after each attempt, only idled the engine in the workshop and I drive home, there is oil on the floor not long after I arrive.
Not having done this on any modern engine, why is this so difficult on the D4D?Dave - 2010 Silver GXL Prado 150 TD Manual.

Autocorner Mackay dropped my tappet cover or over tourqed it and split the plastic on the rear right hand side... The silcone they used covered the mistake for a couple of months until i noticed it... Guess what? They are saying it wasnt them. I put my Prado 150 in for it's 20k service recently asking why it rattles so much on a cold morning. The service guys required it overnight for a cold start and blamed it on pour fuel. I have since researched this on PradoPoint and the 120 series have all sorts of problems with this same concern. Has anyone had this problem with their 150?Last edited by Moorey1; 12-01-2013, 09:33 PM.

Thanks Roo, the info on the tappet cover torque settings is exactly what I had been unsuccessfully searching the net for. The torque setting used was going to be a part of my questions for the service manager when we catch up on Tuesday morning. Unfortunately my torque wrench won’t go that low to check so I am unable to accurately check.Dave - 2010 Silver GXL Prado 150 TD Manual.

Having the (diesel) Prado overnight to check valve clearances at the 40K, 80K, 120K, etc services shouldn't be an argument.
Warranty and Service manual (one of the books that should be in your glove box), section 2-5 Maintenance Schedule, Valve Clearance (diesel models) note 2. "Check valve clearances using a thickness gauge and adjust clearances if necessary."
From the Toyota Service manual,
http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/5489...1-pdf-24k?da=y
and then to inspect the valve clearances,
http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/5489...-pdf-307k?da=y
Note that the clearances specified at 4 (a) and 4 (c) are COLD clearances.
If the valves require adjustment, you will be up for extra costs over and above the fixed price service. I lost that argument as the maintenance schedule specifies inspection, not inspection and adjustment.

My wifes vehicle is approaching the 40,000km service so i asked our local Toyota service center about leaving the vehicle the night before the 40,000km service and was told NO this isnt required they never do this just drop the vehicle off in the morning.
So clearly they no longer wish to have our loyal service and i need to go elsewhere, can anyone suggest a Toyota Service Center around Melbourne that actually does they job they are meant to?Last edited by Alpinebully; 20-01-2014, 09:20 AM.His: 1978 FJ45
