Spoke to an ARB representative who mentioned that ARB has secured a pre-release version of the facelift Prado and performing R&D to develop the bullbar. Anticipated/expected release is in 3 months time.

Actually, UK and US towing capacity regulations don't require the down ball weight to be included, even though you need to take this off the capacity. In Australia this is taken into account already, it is total towing minus the down ball weight.

If the US is quoting 3000kg towing for the LC150, then what do you think the max downball weight would be, 200-300kg? Then subtract that from 3000kg and you have max capacity of around 2500-2700kgs. Pretty close to what we have in Aus.

This occurs for all makes and models, Nissan Navaras are rated to 3300kg in UK and 3000kg here because we have already taken the 200kg downball weight off. Land Rover are the same.

Also, towing capacity is more about engine and transmission cooling. In Aus the hotter climates that these vehicles are expected to perform reliably in is much higher than in UK and much of the US, heat is the enemy for both these components so capacity is generally downgraded to protect these parts. The LC150 is more than strong enough to pull huge loads, but the tran/eng cooling combo may not pass the tests.

Toyota just want to sell more 200 series landcruisers that is the simple and only reason (IMO) they restrict the prado's towing capacity here in Aus.

I have a feeling that the towing capacity is basically legal insurance. Toyota set the initial towing capacity of the diesel RAV4 at 500kg in Aust while it was around 1500kg in Europe. This was due to the "local conditions". It has recently been raised to 1000kg.

When I asked the dealer about the Prado 2500kg capacity vs 3500kg for a Jeep GC his reply was that the Prado capacity was valid up to the full passenger and luggage load of the vehicle, whereas the Jeep had to be steadily de-rated as the vehicle load increased. Not sure about other 3000kg+ vehicles. I suspect a lot of the 2500kg limit (vs 3000kg) is due to performance in extreme (Australian) conditions with a full load.

Structurally, the back end of my work Colorado is exactly the same as the previous model but they have upped the towing capacity. And the car is a bigger rig too compared to the previous model. Can they simply upgrade the springs and brakes and that gives the added capacity?

Called into our local dealership yesterday to enquire about the 150 Facelift towing capacity and was told......5 door GXL remaining at 2500kgs for a braked trailer (caravan).

Looking at the Toyota UK website the current 150 5 door is listed at 3000kgs for towing a braked trailer.

    http://www.toyota.co.uk/cgi-bin/toyo...-specification

Shame Toyota Australia marketing has taken the path of keeping the 5 door Prado at 2500kgs for a braked trailer.

Just about all the competition is above 2500kgs.

We are looking at a new caravan with full ensuite...... tare is around 2150kgs and the Prado would no longer be legal.

Our current van tares at 2000kgs (2400kgs loaded, including water) and the Prado tows it with ease.

Seems that Toyota is protecting their LC200 market.

    Cheers,

Actually I reckon they should put in some tougher plastic under the wheel arches, it got thinner with the 120 and even more so with the 150.
