I like technology, I made sure our 120 GX had both option packs to get TC and STC but this? It doesn't do anything you can't do yourself and to be honest feet off and drive through a rock garden at constant speed is asking for trouble. I don't know any time that I have driven through a dry rocky creek bed without pausing to check my line or obstacles. Sure you need to have an idea but to just drive straight through even at a sedate pace is a bit of an ask. I like how they have used a 120 without any electronic aids to demonstrate how to get bogged!

After seeing crawl in action on a well and truly bogged prado diesel on Fraser in the sand, impressive was all that came to mind. Did not even need to think about getting a set of our MaxTrax out. Our VX only has the KDSS but and in my opinion the KDSS and aftermarket suspension, even better. After seeing it being put through it paces compared to a GXL prado with the same brand suspension on the same track I was very happy with the extra articulation that the KDSS offered by not being hung up on sway bars.

At the end of the day, get what you can afford. I love toys and buttons - go the Kakadu, I would.

Crawl control seems to me to be mostly manipulation of breaks via computer, and some software and a few buttons.. Wonder how easy it would be to say upgrade an altitude...

I like that clip, who needs a driver when you have crawl control.

Lets face it... as a driver you will never go into a track were it has a high probability of you getting stuck, it's just common sense and for some who don't end up using their common sense will loose a lot of money because of their stupidity. Some insurance won't cover extreme stupidity.

The technology that's coming out into today's society is extraordinary but for some it comes with a hefty price. IMO if you want the best you need to pay a little bit more for it. That said, I would rather use the extra money on well build parts that has gone through years of testing and modifications to suit the everyday needs.

It's sad to see how people buy the top of the range Kakadu and end up selling it after they have done little Km's to it due to change of work and it is a once in a million chance that you will see a brand new Kakadu tackling the Nolan's crossing or hill climbing the rocks of Wheeny Creek.

I would go old school any day, at times I find it hard to justify whether or not the very best is worth it and that is why I went for the GXL. I have big plans for my Black Mamba. No offence to the Gramps and Nana in the forum (I have a lot of respect for you) but if you are old and you have weak bones and you want to put all your life savings to a fourby buy the Kakadu, if you like the look of a modified vehicle and looking for the best value for money in terms of a Toyota Prado range the GXL is the way to go without busting your pocket or selling it within a years time because you made the wrong choice of getting it through a finance.

Is their a correct answer on the Prado petrol vs diesel for sand driving?

In one thread that I linked earlier, a few guys said that the higher output petrol is better, but in this thread, someone mentioned that the diesel is better.

Touching the brake or accelerator overrides the CRAWL. I drove one of my favorite test tracks a week ago, taking the hard line (steep, waist deep ruts, 45deg tree roots and very loose). My previous GU with 33 muds and 3" flexi coils couldnt climb the the tree root and my NT Pajero before that had twin lockers, 2" lift and AT's needed both lockers in and plenty of scrabble to make it.

When i took the Kak there last week, low range, rear locker in and CRAWL on. To my complete surprise, the Kak, slowly inched up the entire track, the CRAWL did an amazing job of not spinning tyres and spitting rocks, bouncing the car around. Biggest shock was how it climbed up over the tree root with the left rear tyre in a waist deep rut and the opposite front in the air. Both my passenger and i sat in awe.

More to come, next time with pics and the GoPro attached to the bullbar.

                  cheers

The petrol would be cheaper to buy. If you're not towing a large van, it would be the way to go.

Im averaging just under 12L/100km, with a mix of 60/40 highway/suburbs. Love the smooth power delivery and intant on-tap mumbo. Still getting used to the change from a TD to the V6.

                        cheers

and I love my TD, get under 10 Lph and I gun it off the mark at every opportunity.
On the 2012 GTG there was some sand dune climbing and every petrol vehicle that tried got further than the best diesel could manage.
If you are going to tow regularly get a diesel. If you do lots of short trips or not many kms a year the V6 would be my choice. Tow regularly and do lots of short trips and not many kms a year, mmm now it is getting tricky.

Thanks ... I am not sure what a GTG is ... But it sounds like the petrol is the way to go for me.

EDIT .. did a google and found out about GTG. Great feedback. Thank you.
