I tow a camper that's around 1500kg,use 4th except when I'm on flat stretches with no wind. Current fuel consumption gives you a good idea if how hard the engine is working and load on the gearbox .Biggest problem in 5th is if it drops out of lock up the torque converter heats up the gearbox oil really quickly and it gets really hot.

Me as well. Very conscious of temps building up so use 4th - and drive at about 95kph. My camper weighs in at about 1300kg.Originally posted by krypto View PostI tow a camper that's around 1500kg,use 4th except when I'm on flat stretches with no wind. Hi, I have driven over 1,000,000 Km in 5 speed manual Landcruisers [about 5 in total]and lot of that was with a trailer [1000Kg+]. The owner's manual for all the vehicles stated "do not use 5th when towing". 5th in a 5 speed manual is always an over drive so should not be used when towing. Never had a transmission or engine issue but the same can't be said for the suspension! One day I may write a book of my experiences. Owen
