This new head unit arrived today: https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/...Id=32793942638
As promised here is some brief info about the unit and a couple of photos here: https://imgur.com/a/1uhL0
As I was told by a Chinese seller that it wouldn't work in a right hand drive car and the canbus was different I was apprehensive but keen (perhaps too keen) to give it a try.
It seems to fit without much trouble, if anyone has taken out the air vents above the head unit which have to be swapped then they will know that this can be a bit fiddly. There are seven clips which have to be held (at once) before the vents will come out. There probably is a special tool for this but I struggled with small screwdrivers and little wedges.
The wiring is plug and play although I have ended up with a socket left over! The Chinese head unit fits back into the slot just fine although I had to be careful to tuck the extra wires and canbus decoder in behind.
I had been worried about the hazard switch as it is on the left of the unit, obviously designed for left hand drive vehicles. Luckily the switch body is still the same and fits into the new unit but you do need to change the original button with the one supplied. The wire will only just reach as it is now on the "wrong" side.
The screen looks much bigger than the original making it easier to see for people like me with old eyes.
I have only had a chance to give it a very quick test, google maps works as does iGO which comes pre-loaded with a 2015 Q4 map which (I think) is the same as the Toyota version. I will be updating it.
Amazingly the rear camera works, I was worried about this having been told that Toyota use 6 volt cameras and most after-market units use 12. I haven't tested the voltage yet so I may get a nasty shock.
Now the things I need some help/advice with. As you can see from the pictures the unit is only bodged in at the moment as I am not sure where to put the microphone and GPS aerial so the wires just come out of the front and go up onto the dash at present.
There are many things to sort out yet but I thought I would post my progress so far in case anyone is thinking of ordering something similar.
The problems that I know about so far, are that there are no spoken directions when navigating with iGO and when I tried the phone by ringing my wife she could hear me but I couldn't hear her. The radio and button press beeps do work. My wife needs the car for the upcoming weekend and refuses to drive with wires poking out of the dash so I will revert to the original head unit temporarily again soon.
