That might help with undercover carparks with the Roofrack installed.

Re: When is the new generation Prado due? First look
Howdy. Had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the L5 version today. This variant didn't have the full off-road pack which includes CRAWL and Multi Terrain Select but full of interesting technology. But still with KDSS which was noticeably stiffer when we compared it to the 120 Prado beside it. Without the opportunity to drive it yet my initial thoughts are; you will get used to the exernal look which is an amalgam of LC 200, RAV 4 and Kluger, as you would expect. From the front it is a Prado and from side on more than a bit Kluger. Second and third row seats will be a challenge to remove and replace with storage systems as they are not just bolted in any more. Interior room overall is certainly improved for passengers all round. Plenty of 10 amp cigarette plugs around the cabin. Instruments, dash and steering wheel all with good fit and feel. But a few challenges in getting to things like the second gear start. You don't have a simple button anymore you have to scroll through a series of menus which is slow and tedious but this is the system that will be used on a couple of the models by the looks of things
Whilst the engines are the same they sound distinctly different. New Prado D4D has considerably less common rail knock and much quieter, again when compared directly with the current model alongside. Intercooler is now in front of the radiator which I am not too sure about. Plenty of room for a second battery and compressor underbonnet
Looking forward to putting it over our test track in the near future
The full national rollout for dealers and fleet starts in the first week of November so that should mean product will be in dealerships by mid November. They are already on the docks and waiting to be put into owners and dealers hands
Interesting that the article states that the 3 door has a higher towing capacity than the 5 door. I know what my rig feels like towing just over 1.2 tonne of camper trailer. I thought of putting 3 tonnes behind a 3 door just scares me.

Would that be due to same size motor and breaks but less vehicle weight therefore greater towing capacity?
I would not get too excieted about seeing CRAWL and KDSS on the whole model range that is not the plan at the moment. Those features plus the off-road camera system will only be available on the high end spec with KDSS on the VX. Reversing camera standard across the range apart from GX. The top spec will have two option packs; off-road as above and a safety pack that includes radar cruise control and a few other trick bits and pieces. There are a few nice aero flaps under the body and wheel lead ins that will not last long off-road but may be useful deflecting rocks and stones for a while. The multi terrain stuff is also only on the top spec model
The multi function steering wheel is nice and meaty with good feel and grip and some nice features at your fingertips. Auto trans is now tip tronic but not sure if it holds gears yet. Centre diff lock on all models as no LSD due to stability/traction control being standard. Push button transfer case as per LC200
Smart entry and start on all models which means you need to be very careful to ensure the key battery and car battery do not go flat as things can become quite difficult if that occurs in a remote spot away from road service
For bush work it will make for some interesting choices. Waiting to see what the aftermarket accessory suppliers are able to provide will be a worthwhile activity I suspect
Well if Toyota are making an off road pack available then that's going to shoot down in flames their "don't go offroad" argument. Stupid argument in the first place. Offroad options have been sorely missing as an upgrade pack so far. About time.

I also went Prado 150 shopping in Perth yesterday with the son inlaw (looks like you got better pricing than I did). Here's what I've learnt about the new 150 series that will be out in about 4 weeks. Prices are on the road with dealer delivery, luxury tax and rego. In terms of models they talk in Level 1 to 5 and so it may be hard to a do a like for like with the old ones. The cost will be from ~$65k to $100k over that range.
150 GXL diesel equiv was quoted at $72k on road. $1k less for petrol.
150 VX diesel equiv was quoted at $84k on road. $1k less for petrol.
200 GXL diesel $83 on road, $11k less for petrol.
No new 120 diesel's left, but they will do a petrol 120 GXL for $63.5k and a VX for $73k
Note that the 150 GXL has all the electronics including stability control, 7 airbags etc, but not the KDS, that's on the VX equivalent and above.
The fuel tank is now 150 litres, due to rear seats stowing by folding into floor. These are manual on GXL and electronic on VX and above.
Order one today and you'll get it in mid January, so Toyota has no problem selling at these prices, you'd never believe the $aus was over $us 0.90 eh?
Anyway, good news for owners of 120 DiD Prados in terms or resale methinks.
