  • 2016 GXL rear suspension drop / travel? Improvements?

Can anyone tell me what their rear measurement from bottom of of rim to guard is at full extension. Mine is measuring 885 and when on the ground is 830.
Does the sway bar link need extending? and can you install a spacer on the bottom part of the thread to utilise some of the thread sticking out the top?

The shock absorber limits the rear travel. If you want more travel, you need a longer length shock. Have a look in the suspension database.

Once you have an extended length shock, you will also need to consider: springs, brake lines and the sway bar links. You can get Roadsafe extended sway bar links for the 150 here http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOYOTA-PR...-/141905906045

      Hey wheelan,

Which shocks do you currently have in the rear?

DMS Drummond Motor sport rear shocks and front coilovers fitted (locally made stuff). I dont think, havent tried yet, that the shock is the limiting factor. The guys that fitted it (local tyre shop) said that to get the new springs in the rear they had to unbolt everything, including the brakes. Maybe the set up in the 2016 have limited the down travel for some reason, live rear end couldnt think why?

This is dependent on the coil length. Up to a certain length, you can squeeze it in without undoing too much.

Yes, but these are not an over heavy spring or extra length. ie wheels on the ground my rear measurement is 830mm from bottom of rim to the guard, and this is with the spring not sitting in its seat (installers mistake, who are re-doing) which would add 15 mm or so of preload. I thought they would have slipped in. Should have done the install myself, just didnt have time.

You have around 50mm of lift but only have 55mm of rear down travel left. This means your rear shocks are simply too short. Get longer shocks ASAP.

Try unbolting your shocks at full extension and see how much further the rear extends without them. Your shocks will be the limiting factor.

Extended rear links are nice to return the sway bar to neutral after a lift, but they do not give you more travel unless your shocks are over about 615mm long.

                  Hey wheelan,

The 120, 150 and FJ rear suspension geometry are nearly identical. I haven't measured a new 2016 model yet, but there's no reason to suspect it will be very different.

Here is a plot of ride height vs droop from the 120 series, which shows you how the droop can change with both shock open length and ride height.

If your 2016 geometry is the same, I'm guessing you have quite short rear shocks, somewhere around 582mm open.

I would find out as quickly as you can from the installer what the open length is, as it is absolutely no good for the lift you have, your shocks will be leaking from top outs in no time!

I currently have 96mm of droop with 618mm open length shocks at 830mm ride height.

Excellent Graphical representation Mark - Nice work... (which reminds me I must get longer shocks myself!)

Thanks to all, so going on the above graph, and my measurements of 55 mm droop at 830 height my shock open length would be 580. I will pull one out on the weekend and check

                          Hey all,

For 150 drivers using that plot, keep in mind I made it using 120 series with 17" rims.

If you have a 150 with 18" rims, just subtract 12.5mm from your ride height and droop measurements.

So wheelan is around 817.5mm ride height with 55mm of droop, suggesting his shock is possibly shorter than 580mm. Perhaps they have used a shock which is close to the OEM length of 574mm open?

For Lski, your equivalent ride height would be around 840.5mm, and with 101mm of droop, this would suggest you have a rear shock longer than 620mm. Perhaps you have the 1478LT Bilstein, which is 625mm open?? ..or maybe the 24-217897, which many use spacers to give open length near 620mm?

Lski, could you specify which Dobinson coil and Bilstein you have in the rear?

...this all assumes the 2016 150 rear geometry has remained the same, it could be a new setup with different bumpstop-axle bind.

Whitey, I will have to check as I can't remember off the top of my head the shock/spring numbers, but I have a feeling it is the open length 618 shock. I do also have several spacers/washers at the top of the shock mount and an additional nut under the swaybar link.

                              Hey,

Did you get your suspension done at Zordos? If yes, it's the 24-217897.
