  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) - 2022 GXL

Hi All. I have a GXL on order and am struggling to find out of it has a TPMS built-in. It looks like it doesn't ... is that right? In that is the case I'm wondering if others have installed an aftermarket one?

I have a late Aug 2021 GXL, I don't believe there are any changes from mine before mid year.
No the GXL doesn't have a TPMS, only higher spec models.
If the Toyota TPMS is as good as their useless SatNav, you are better off with a after market one, especially if you tow

Thanks "Not enough time". - as I suspected - I can see the basic TPMS on ebay - that replace the cap on the valve, have others tried these? Do they do the trick?

I've had an Ebay cheapie ($35) for 4 years, works fine.
Having the display plugged into the cig outlet is a bit awkward to view tho'.
The batteries last about 2+ years, so make sure they include the plastic tools so you can replace them.
If you have steel rims fit a short length of ATF hose or the like on the valve stem under the sensor to stop the valve stem/sensor from flopping/rubbing against the rim in deep sand or mud.
I can't set the low-pressure alarm threshold below 16psi on mine, so it beeps when driving at 15psi.
Some kits can't set the alarm threshold below 20psi, even tho the manuals say you can. You have to buy them (like I did) to find out this drawback.

Can't live without a TPMS anymore. Its been handy for detecting slow leaks and flats as they happen.

Thanks RPP for the input. The PSI threshold is interesting. As far as mounting the display - i see there are some screens which are solar mounted and sit on the dash but I'm not sure I really want it that front and centre. There is one that sits in a blank switch spot. I quite like the idea of that but it I wonder whether it might be too hard to see! I reckon I'll just give something a go

I don't find these TPMS units all that accurate for checking tyre pressures. They're reasonably accurate, but no substitute for a using a proper gauge if you want to set pressures precisely. For that reason I don't feel the need to mount the unit where I can see it. There's not much point anyway, as many or them only show one wheel at a time, so you have to take your eyes off the road for an extended period to see all wheels, esp if you're towing and have 6 or 8 wheels. I rely on setting an alarm for low pressure to get early warning of a loss of pressure.

I have Tyredog TPMS and they are very useful and correlates with the gauges at petrol stations and my own. Just a minor one where not all the sensors become active straight after driving off. 1 takes a while to make the connection. It has paid for itself over a few times already once with the alarm going off without realising that there was a flat (woodchip entering at the shoulder of the tyre). Would have kept driving if not for the alarm and ruin a rim.

My TPMS, inflator/compressor gauge and my stick gauge all read differently by a PSI or so. The tyre pressures also vary 10-20% between cold and hot.
Don't sweat over the differences. I use my Inflator (or stick gauge) to set the desired pressures, and the TMPS to stay out of trouble.

Thanks all - I'll look into these - some good points there to help me decide which way Thank

                          Figures.

                          Does Toyota sell kits?
What TPMS kits do people recommend?

No Au models have TPMS, Toyota must think us Australians are to uncivilized for the tech. We miss out on a lot.
O/S models have TPMS fitted as standard, the Multi info display is capable of connecting and displaying TPMS.

the TPMS also runs on a radio band that's licensed in Aus (433Mhz, but is a free ISM band in region 1) obviously they weren't to interested in developing a 900mhz version.

Also, buy a VX if you can stretch to it, I bought the 2018 GXL and wish I bought the VX after a couple years.

                              Hi Toopy,

The 433MHz band can be used at up to 25mW by unspecified use low power devices which include many other brand Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems, Garage Door Openers, Wireless security sensors etc.

The ACMA licencing requirements is only if you transmit over 25mW and/or use the band for radio communications so I don't think that is what is limiting Toyota fitting the factory TPMS to Aust vehicles.

Maybe the issue is that Toyota Aust can't guarantee that a Toyota in-wheel sensor will not put out more than 25mW so don't take the chance at non-compliance and a potential major recall.

Edit: Checked and TPMS was made a mandatory fitment in the US and EU so probably why their Prados have it automatically across all models.

Edit2: Toopy, I looked up the tech data for all the common boards used in in-wheel TPMS sensors and the highest power one was 13dBm (20mW) so that can't be the issue so maybe we need to add the TPMS mod to our research list :-)
