  • Toyota 2.5t towbar bolting arrangement to chassis

    Hey guys,

Just refitted the towbar to the Prado, after having to buy a bolting set.
The set came with 4 coarse threaded 8.8 bolts with 4 x threaded flat bar washers, and 4 flat bar washers not threaded (to use as HD washers). 2 of the threaded flat bar washers has a length of wire weldd to the end so you can hold them inside the chassis rail while bolting together. The outer bolts are able to be fitted by hand as they are at the end of the chassis rail.
Also supplied was 4 fine threaded bolts complete with spring washers, but no nuts.

I noticed inside the chassis rail on both sides, the inside hole for the towbar, already has a nut welded inside, so i did not need to use the wire attached flat bar threaded washers. The coarse threaded bolts with a spring washer and flat bar HD washer fitted through the towbar, and threaded directly onto the nut inside the chassis rail on either side.

But i noticed half way between the inside and outside bolts, there is 2 welded nuts inside the chassis also. These i assume would suit the fine threaded bolts. The nuts look quite rusty inside the chassis rail, and as the previously remove towbar only had 4 mounting holes, there is no way the other 2 bolts on each chassis rail could be fitted, unless i drilled 2 more holes through the towbar itself.

So at present, i have 4 bolts holding the towbar to the chassis rails, 2 bolts either side.

I did ring the towbar guy where i bought the bolt set from, and i said i did not use the wire attached threaded flat bar washers as a not inside the chassis rail, as there was a nut already welded inside it. When i told him about the fine thread bolts that i did not fit as there was no holes in the towbar to fit them, he said not to drill holes in the towbar, and Toyota must feel the 4 bolts are sufficient for the rating of the towbar.

Can anyone confirm that they also only have 4 bolts in total on their towbar, or do you have 8 bolts all up?

Pretty sure the rating was 2.5t braked, 750kg not.
But will re-check that tomorrow to confirm.
Mine is a Toyota make, but think it is made by hayman reece anyhow.
The bar looks like the one in th attached image, and has only 2 bolt holes either side.

That's interesting..... The max weight is fine for me but my max doen force weight is 120kg
My camper trailer with nothing in the front tool box and 4 empty jerrys on the front comes in at 130kg
So I wonder if yiurs has a higher rating down force?...

Just checked the camper manual, its tare is 1190kg not 1450.
Think the tow ball weight is around 145kg also. But i put a few extra bits in the box at the front, so id expect a little more than 145.

To put the other bolts in id have ro drill holes through the towbar itself. The towbar guy where i bought the bolt set from seemed to baulk at drilling holes in the towbar itself.
Just needed confirmation if someone else has only 4 bolts fitted to the bar.

Have decided to remove the towbar, and i am going to drill 4 holes (2 either side) and fit the fine threaded bolts up through the towbar into the captive nuts inside the chassis rail.
I had to buy a tap to re-thread and clean the nuts up though to ensure the bolts will go through ok.
Now i have a small project after work on the weekend to do.....
Rather have all 8 bolts fitted than risk towing only with 4 bolts and something giving way.
The towbar does have what looks like holes drilled and weld put inside them where i will have to drill, but only on the reinforcing plate fitted to the top of the towbar.
                  The result: (rotate image clockwise)

Cost me the price of an M12x1.25mm thread tap, 1 x 6mm broken drill but, and about 1.5hrs of my time.
