  • Auto Locker Compatibility With Manual??

I am all set to purchase a Detroit Locker for the rear with an eye to go for a Detroit True-trac up front in the future if additional traction is required.

My vehicle is a manual diesel and I have just heard that apparently the manuals don't like auto lockers due to the increased backlash.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? To be honest I haven't heard of too many people going for auto lockers in the rear of these but after doing some research I'm happy to give it a go, particularly with the Detroit which sounds far more refined than the Lokka.

    Any ideas?

I do like the idea of the eLocker but not the price unfortunately. I also appreciate the simple nature of the auto locker. They certainly have their advantages over the selectable diff locks. Thanks for the input though!

They say can't put auto locker in a manual, I can't see how it would matter.
I understand why you don't want to spend $5000 putting elockers in, it's just overcapitalising.
If I had my time again, I'd put a Detroit Tru trac (proper LSD in rear) $700ish plus fitting.
Then Arb in front as I did. Under 2k with compressor & 5 year warranty.
Put an auto locker in the rear & see?

I have contacted Harrop to see what their response is - the fact they didn't mention anything when I enquired makes me think it will be fine. Not to mention plenty of trucks in the US getting around with them including plenty of manual 4runners which run a similar drivetrain.

Detroits are USS$550 + $70 ish freight. So landed for around $800. That's well under half the gong rate for elockers..

I just received this response from Harrop:

There is no issue with running a detriot locker in auto or manual vehicles.

Im assuming it something to do with Lokka design that may lead to it not being suitable.

                  Regards,

I did see that, but they want $575 to fit!

Also on this does anyone have any suggestions as to what should be replaced while I'm getting the job done? At a minimum carrier bearings seem like a standard thing, and obviously a centre to housing gasket but what about the pinion bearings/seals and while the axles are out the wheel bearings and oil seals?

I don't really want to bother with anything if it doesn't need it and I currently have no indications that anything requires replacement. Just thought I'd see if there are some items worth changing out while it's in pieces, particularly the centre..

Change the axle seals. $20 each. They wear out.

Thanks mate. Good tip. I'll get some on order. Is it worth changing out wheel bearings also in your opinion? It's the inner axle seals I want isn't it? Those that sit inside the housing..
