  • Torque Converter Lockup upgrade and Nomad Valve Body upgrade

    G’day Readers,
Researching these upgrades to get some performance improvement, I carry around 420 kg in the rear cargo and back seat area for work purposes. Also hook up the trailer as well, about 1.4t all up. If you believe the benefits that are reported, should get better fuel economy, engine braking and crisp gear changes. She’s pretty doughy with the gear changes since the exhaust upgrade so why not go further, that’s the plan anyhow,
Has anyone had these upgrades done and if so what is the verdict.
    Thanks Jim.

I suggest getting your trans serviced first, there are many mixed reviews of the benefits of the Nomad valve body.
My trans improved a lot after I serviced it and fitted a trans oil cooler and I was running a supercharger on mine.

I did it in my HDJ and thought it was a waste of money. Could have been spent elsewhere.

With all that constant weight might be better idea to look for a manual Hulux?

Leethal With your cooler did you add it to the OEM radiator cooler loop or just do away with the OEM radiator cooler and have your new cooler as the sole trans cooler?

Not an option Carco. My Prado eats Hilux’s. The last decent Hilux’s to roll out of the Toyota factory were back in the late 80’s IMO.
Drove a 2013 model for about 5 yrs, work vehicle, nah would not go there.
A solid rig for towing, tows the Signature beautifully compared to the Hilux. Talked myself out of the torque converter upgrade.
Looks like problems there in the long term. But the Nomad is a real option still. Just trying to locate someone in Brisbane that can do it. Don’t want to go Sunshine Coast or send the valve body to a MELBOURNE.
Had my rig for over 12 yrs, have never overheated the transmission, even on a big work tow to Moranbah. That was 1.9t trailer. Mind you serviced regularly and run full synthetic in transmission and engine. No she’s a keeper.

You are right, had the transmission serviced a couple of years ago, full pan off and filter replaced etc, I’m just chasing that little bit extra. Since I had the exhaust fitted, for me, it has lifted the get up and go to where I want it. It just needs the gear changes to be decisive, responsive it that’s the right description. Hey if I find that this upgrade is going to cause dramas then I won’t bother. But from what I’ve read so far it sounds positive. I just need to find a workshop that does it and discuss real outcomes from their customers.

It would be good to have a drive before you buy option. How did it disappoint?

Didn't really improve the shift on it. A little snappier but that also may have been the full synthetic fluid I put in it. Apart from that nothing else other than saying I have one fitted.....

RedAdventureWagon I fitted it in series with the extra cooler after the in radiator cooler, even towing a 2.5 ton off road van up Fraser Island I had no transmission over temp issues.
Also the engine temp was never an issue even though I was running the blower.

I went for the converter lock up kit in the 150. She's only a 5-speed so not the massive difference that the 6-speeds get but for top gear towing it's great.
On the really big hills she drops from locked 5 to locked 4, not much will stop her then.
The 90's pull OK in locked 3 which is the same as 4 in the 150, direct gear.
Huge jump from O/D to direct in these older gearboxes.
Modern stuff usually has two overdriven and the rest underdriven which gives much better spacing between gear changes.
You'd need the converter overhauled in a 90 if you were going for lock up as the stock clutch isn't too great. A rebuilt converter will have the clutch upgraded as well as the thrust bearing.
I had my 90's trany and converter fully rebuilt, about $3800 drive in/out as she'd done the thrust bearing in the converter.
Was a sweet trany after that but the KZ just didn't have enough grunt.

Just too much for me, but I did see Taipan Convertors supplied just up the road from me. Might just drop In and and ask the question..
These are purpose built heavy duty with everything done, can’t see them being cheap option. Asnutp.com

If your converter craps, she'll pump metal bits through the trany, complete overhaul then.
By the time a converter starts making noises it's done the damage so certainly check out what's available and the upgraded clutch etc.
Actual trany is a very good unit, KZ won't hurt one.

Bit of an update on what I’ve chosen to have done to the transmission. I am having the valve body upgraded using a Ratio Tek kit. This will improve gear changes and increase the clamping pressure of the Torque Convertor. There is no need to tinker with the Convertor at all. Unless they find gold dust in there! Decided to travel to Sunny Coast after all after talking with Bill from Ron Hill Autos. From all reports these guys are the equivalent of Wholesale Autos down in Vic. Been around a long time and know their stuff. So we’ll see how she goes on the trip back to Bris tomorrow.

So took the drive to the Sunshine Coast to have the auto valve body upgrade done and taking notice more than ever how te transmission reacts to enthusiastic throttle input... I met with Bill and we discussed what was going to done. Now I have only talked with Bill on the phone and he immediately gave me the keys to his Prado and said I can have it for the day. He has the upgrade kit in his so I could feel the difference it makes, what a legend. Work was completed later that afternoon, road tested and Penrite full synthetic ATF as I requested was used to fill. Bill gave me the kit instruction sheets so I could see what was installed. I don’t mind giving a plug for business that has and gives excellent customer service, and Ron Hill Auto’s deserves mine.
So after handing over the sponsorship I jumped in for the trip home. Found a nice little bag of treats hanging off the rear view mirror and a Xmas card. It’s the little things that make the difference. Okay back on track, getting into the traffic I immediately noticed the short sharp gear changes going along slow. I hit the motorway and stepped on it to merge and bang, the response and feel was crisp and no lag while going into gear. I am a happy camper, don’t forget I carry around 400-450kg of gear in the back so it’s got some opposition to contend with.
While just cruising I can barely feel the changes even happening but when the foot suddenly drops to make a move the change up is instantaneous with no hesitation or double pump to make it shift.
Well worth the money spent IMO. I’ll be using these guys for any transmission related work in the future, well worth the drive.
