  • Head lights dont switch off automatically.

    Hi Everyone,

A few months ago we were driving up a fairly steep hill and got stuck. It was quite dry and a bit of gravel caused us to loose traction. After backing back down the hill the car stalled when we got to the bottom. A few lights came up on the dash, can't remember what they were now. The car wouldn't start for a few minutes after. Got the car started and went about our journey.

Ever since then, the headlights don't turn off automatically when we turn the car off and remove the key from the ignition. Found out the hard way, my wife drove the car to work and left the lights on. Battery was flat when she tried to go home.

My search revealed a number of posts on headlight upgrades etc but I couldn't find anything relevant to my problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You must have a newer model than me. Mine don't turn off automatically that's for sure, but when you open the door a loud audible drone of an alarm sounds off until you turn the lights off or put the key back in and turn the accessories to "On." You never accidentally leave them on with that alarm.

      Hi Brett,

Yeah we have the 2000 model. It definitely used to switch off the lights automatically.

I think I have a Gregories/Haynes manual for it somewhere. I will have a look through that.

Anyone else seen this before or know how to fix it?

      Thanks heaps

      Nigel

Sounds like a relay jammed on maybe.

Well my old 97 GLX petrol had been modified to have the lights on all the time some were in its past life before I got it. Had another relay added, which I have since disconnected, so it is back to stock, ie light works via the normal rotary switch on the stork. Mine do not turn off automatically either, just the loud buzzer sounds when you turn the key off with the lights on.
If you have a manual with the wiring circuit, it should tell you which relay it is mate, sorry I’m away on the boat at the moment, and mine is in the shed.
It does sound like a relay has jammed in the closed position (on), and I would think that it will be in the engine bay. They may be marked on the box cover, I’m fairly sure mine are, either on the lid or the mounting board. May even be in the user manual, as I think the fuse layout is.
Some one here may be able to scan and send you a copy of the right circuit diagram.
If all else fails you could pull the relays out one at a time, with the key off, and see when the lights go out. Just pull one, see if that is it, if not refit, and try the next one, and so on, till you find it.
                The old saying goes that
Electrical problems take ages to find, but are fixed quickly.
Mechanical problems are found quickly but take ages to fix.
                Keep us posted mate.

                Cheers
                Ken

ps forgot to say, you had better let us know what year and model it is.

Hi All, im a late sarter on this one and my problem is somewhat similar.

I put a new single DIN stereo in over the weekend and now the head light alarm does not sound when I turn the truck off and pull my keys out of the ignition while the lights are on. Prior to changing the stereo the alarm would work without fail. I suspect that during the installation I crossed a wire somewhere and poped the fuse/buzzer.

I have checked all of the fuses and nothing has blown. I'm keen to hear if anyone else has had this problem.

                    Cheers
                    Marcus
