  • 5VZFE won't start after new battery installed

    Hello,

Firstly, sorry if this has been posted before, I did try using the search bar but I was unable to find my problem in an existing thread.

    A bit of back story,

Almost year ago, my mate and I bought our 1999 5VZ-FE Prado manual off his old man for 2 cartons of Tooheys New, and so the legend of Toohey's Ringpull was born ("Toohey's" because she cost us 2 cartons of Tooheys to buy, and "Ringpull" because we found an impressive collection of Bundaberg Ginger Beer ring pull caps while pulling apart/cleaning the interior).

We soon discovered there were a few issues with the old girl, the most pressing issue was a leaking head gasket, and so began the engine teardown. We replaced every head gasket and cleaned up what we could. We replaced the spark plugs, leads, water pump, radiator, radiator hoses, thermostat and coolant temperature sensor, the exhaust, front brake rotors and pads, steering rack, lower ball joints, and I'm sure there's other stuff too.

Tooheys Ringpull was sitting on jack stands for almost a year, before she finally came to life about a month ago... Albeit very temporarily. She would fire, sputter, and die. We thought it was a timing issue, as we did remove the cams when we pulled apart the engine; although we weren't convinced this was the issue as we made damn sure that when they were put back in, they were in the exact same position. Turns out, we forgot to fully tighten the intake manifold, causing a rather sizeable vacuum leak... Whoops. Once we fixed that, and a couple other things we overlooked, we hooked up the battery out of our other mate's 80 series and she fired up and idled. Awesome! However, she was idling at 1500RPM - this was why we replaced the coolant temperature sensor as we thought that maybe the ECU thought the car was perpetually cold due to not getting a proper signal, and while the old sensor was knackered, it didn't fix the problem

We decided to call it a night, happy that she actually fired up and idled better than she ever had since we owned her. We parked her in the driveway and allowed the rain to give her a well-deserved wash.

This morning, I went out and bought her a brand new battery as our mate needed his back in the 80 so he could drive home (selfish!)... However, with the BRAND new Century battery installed, she won't start. The battery is an OEM equivalent in terms of power.

The engine tries to crank, then immediately dies. I thought it may have been an immobiliser issue, but the immobiliser's light is not illuminated. All the other electrics work fine, however I cannot hear the fuel pump prime.

I don't understand how simply installing a brand new battery, she'd go from running to not running overnight. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

TL/DR; 5VZ-FE 90 ran last night, installed new battery this arvo, doesn't start at all, just tries to crank then dies immediately.

    Cheers,

    Mitch.

can you explain " tries to crank, then immediately dies"? heaps of choices to pick from - starter motor, voltage drop, fuel issues , spark issues..............

what is the voltage of the new battery? i'd say it is unlikely a failed battery but anything is possible, take it back and get them to load test.

once you know the battery is good, start at the start.

Go back to square one, put the other battery in and try it to make sure all is still well.

Possible problems, battery put in wrong way around but usually that causes smoke, battery terminal issue or battery.
      Water has gotten into something.

For some unknown reasons, when you change a battery, occasionally and as an auto electrician, I have no SOLID explanation, a fuse might pop. Tends to happen more so when putting the battery in if the ignition is on.

So so can I suggest, check ALL fuses. Both engine bay and under dash. Including the large 20/30A square fuse at the top of the interior fuse box.

Don’t know how this ended up, but in my motoring lifetime I’ve installed two brand new batteries that have been dead as a maggot. So never discount a dead battery even though you have just bought it and installed. I always now get a load test done before I leave the shop. Jim
