Nailed it! That's only the third or fourth time it had to be mentioned.

While it sat parked I've been fixing other issues.... Like rebuilding the transmission in my wife's Benz. Purchasing a Peugeot project car and getting it roadworthy for my daughters first car. Renovating our laundry, bathroom and kitchen, dealing with several trees that fell over on our property and took out a shed plus getting a business up and running... Really, the Prado was so far down the list I just couldnt give a damn! Honestly, totalling up the time spent on this I think I have maybe one hour with tools in hand and only a couple of hours thinking and scratching my head plus maybe 15 minutes responding to stupid posts on here that I'll never get back. My fault I guess lol... Sorry I don't move fast enough for you.

No sweat mate. You posted that while I was typing. Get rid of it if you like.

In response to the power valve removal, there is definetly a noticeable improvement. Think we are barking up the right tree now. Steve, thanks for the input about the mufflers.

Theres a valve thingy in the exhaust?

                Is it on the 120's?

What sort of a thingy is it?

Lol, you guys! Yeah, there is a valve (spring loaded flap) located in the rear muffler. When you put the foot down for overtaking or pulling away from the lights, the exhaust pressure, will push the flap open allowing the exhaust gases to escape much quicker. Now that mine is removed, every time I accelerate I start looking around for the Commodore with P-Plates haha.

I'll snap a photo of it and it's location tomorrow.

So an update after a reasonable frequent drive that I know the car performs.

First part of the trip is turning right at the bottom of a hill to climb up. This is two lanes and my first move when going onto it is to pull straight to the left to let everyone pass me as they can climb it at a normal speed. While no drastic changes and the car definetly struggled up the hill, it certainly did it a lot easier than previously. Throughout the hole drive the var just felt healthier... If that makes sense.

One thing I did notice was the my fuel consumption seems to have dropped dramatically! Obviously due to a more free flowing exhaust and the fact that I had no reason to mash the pedal anywhere near as much.

Out of curiosity I've slipped the camshaft timing belt cover off today. Belt shows signs of wear which will obviously be swapped out shortly but any signs of stretching (which I could only tell by looking at the position of the two camshafts) seems to be nonexistent.

I'm tempted to rip out the injectors next and drop them off for cleaning as they have never been cleaned to my knowledge.

Highly unlikely but the timing belt could possibly have slipped a notch.... Iv had that on a twin cam 323 before but did have the timing belt cover removed so a rock flicked up and made it slip

Certainly could've! I doubt it.... but it's not impossible. Wish I could find a way to inspect the crank position at the same time without removing a bunch of stuff. Guess I'll find out what I swap the belts. Actually looking at the setup, it looks like I can have the timing belt done in a few hours, including changing the usual suspects.

Most engines you can take the front crank pully off and leave the timing belt cog on... Meaning you could check the timing without pulling too much off

You're probably right but it seemed like way too much effort considering I'm going to be replacing the T belt in the next few weeks.

seeing pictures of that exhaust flap bullsh## has convinced me that a complete change of exhaust system cannot come soon enough on our 3.4.

Hope you get your rig sorted RanJ - I do get where Pugaree was coming from though - sometimes.... despite the best efforts of one and all, forums can't give you the same info that dealer mechanics trained in these vehicles can. Its pretty much that simple. For my money - the loss of power you have experienced is exactly what can be expected when the cam-belt has stretched.....cam-timing has to be perfect and old stretched cam-belts can allow a lot of variation in cam-timing......and that is a job I would be leaving to the dealer.
