  • prado heating problems, changing a thermostat

    hi folks,

i am driving 2002 prado diesel with 135000 km (only), i am having a problem with the engine temperature.
the needle shows almost minimum most of the time, and after a tough uphill climb it can reach the normal heat point but only for a short time.
in addition, the heater in the car is barely working, and starting to push lukewarm air only after 20 min drive, i also mentioned that the fuel consumption is bad, somewhere around 1:7 (liter:km).
after consulting with some folks all said i need to replace my thermostat...
i am wondering if somebody here have a tutorial or any other helpful knowledge of how to do it.
i assume it should be on the bottom big house, but, before going ahead i would like to know how complicated is it and how many additional parts should be removed before getting to the thermostat.

    thanks in advance.

    cheers.

        Std 90s are 88 or 86* while 120 with the 1KD are 71*
Means the coolant dosnt get as hot to start flowing through the engine

scottkz, to be honest i didnt get the reason to install a smaller thermostat from 120.
also, in case i will decide to do this in a local Toyota re seller garage, i am afraid they will not agree to use different parts.
          suggestions, clarifications?

It is identical in every way except it's a different opening temp
            There's no modifying at all

isnt the opening temperature critical to the engine operation? currently i suspect that my fuel consumption is high due to the low operation temperature of the engine.
what is the advantage of reducing the opening temperature?

I would also check the clutch fan a lot of times they are empty and don't work correctly and they can be overhauled for 22 bucks, you need two 11cc tubes of 10,000 Centistoke oil from Mr T
see this links about how to do it, and set the operating temperature up correctly.

                  Hope that helps

I seem to be having the same problem with my 98 Prado.
How do I locate the thermostat?
