Re: Comprehensive Insurance Agreed / Market Value 90 Series

      YEAR - 1999
      MOTOR - 3.4L
      KMS - 236000
      LOCATION -
      VALUE - $18,500
      PREMIUM - $600
      INSURER - GIO

This is a great discussion point as I hate every time insurance is due (house, car and bike). But I stick to my guns each year and get good rates as you can see.
The $600 includes any window replacement free every year, any driver and agreed value basically the works as car insurance goes. How do you get it?
This is what I do. When the renewal comes in querie it and see if they will drop the price(usally not , sorry sir we have given you all the discounts). then they ask if you would like to pay it, and I just politly say "no thanks I am going to look around for a better deal" . Be prepared to swap! Get new quotes and go with the cheapest. But dont pay over the phone ask them to send out a payment form. You then have 14 days to pay the insurance (catch ! this is also a cooling off period and your still covered if you pay and you can cancel with no fees).Because you have not payed your previous insurer they will usally ring you, so just tell them you have gone else where (panic sets in ). They want to know who ,how much and type of cover. Tell them who(but lead them on for a bit till you know your getting somewhere) ,type of cover and always knock off $30-$50 of the price  . Then they will tend to match or do better. It works I haggle each year (its a pain in the ass  ).
      Last years insurance $697
This years from same insurance $717
      Next best insurer $680
So really only saved $3 from previous but the car is now 10 years old and falls into there 'parts are hard to get basket'.But saved $120 if I had just signed the dotted line.
Sorry long winded but hope it can help others
They went straight down to $600 no arguements (also told them was looking for better dea on house just to rub it in!)

        Hey Danrex,

I've been following your method exactly but dont seem to be getting what i want this year! Out of interest what model is your prado? rv, gxl? cause i now thought because i have the base model i'm geting done on the value...interesting cause if yours (1999) is now in the >10years old basket mine (1998) would have been there last year too...but didn't know cause i still got a decent deal... I guess you have purposely left out your location, but i am guessing with a deal like $18,500 for $600 you don't live in Sydney Metro.

Something which may be of interest to others when your trying to increase the "sum insured" is that I was told that accessories that were added after i purchased the car can increase the value... as I have on the policy the purchase price...however items that were on it at purchase do not... pretty obvious i guess but the lady in the AAMI call centre agreed that this leaves a rather blury line....

Shame these multi-policy discounts and customer loyalty don't get you anywhere at the end of the day...guess you just gotta play the game

Re: Comprehensive Insurance Agreed / Market Value 90 Series

My 98 GXL is insured for 15,000 (agreed value) with HBF for around $450. My 18 yr old can drive it but we cop a $750 excess if he stacks it. When I went to buy my 09 GXL the dealer offered me only $10,000 for the 98 - less $1000 for "cleaning it up". $9,000! - you must be joking I told them. I bought by new car from another dealer. I still have the 98 and I could easily flog it in Kal for 15 - 16 grand.

My 09 is insured for $68,000 and cost me $776. This one may only be driven by myself or, if I'm not looking, the missus. No one under 26. Maximum no claim bonus. Voluntary excess of $300 and a free screen every year. Apparently I live in a high risk area hence the greater amount than if I was living in Perth.

            G'Day luked,
Sorry about the little lack of info (was my first post ). Mines a GXL and in Perth.Unlucky with your quotes, I dont think i will get this deal again.
Its true about getting agreeded value as it covers our extras we all love chucking on.( and tell the missus its a bare minimum required! )
They are also saying the new car yards are not selling as much because of Rudd recession, ( i know its not hes fault just like to blame him), so the big boys have been and will increase there prices on parts to help gain there losses back. This in turn is also going to increase the price on second hand parts hence higher premiums back to us.

              Haha hey mate (Danrex)!,

I'm having a dig at you for not having your location but I only just found the "user control panel" the other day and worked out that I needed to put my location in a couple of places for it to appear!

Yea unfortunately, like lots of things now, its just a big business trying to make a dollar (or millions) and it seems as though the concept of insurance which I think is being able to replace it when it's broke is gone. For years my parents were with NRMA which WAS owned by members and seemed to be far better.

Had a 97 V6 Grande just sold it about 5 weeks ago with 186k on it in very good condition, was insured for $18,600, agreed value, about 4 weeks ago we bought a 01 Grande (same shape) turbo diesel with 78k on it, paid $24 for it and insured it for $28 with NRMA, just on $1000 :x :x , this was again agreed value....Regards Steve

                          bit of a joke!
the premium is what I expected though, only 22, recent at fault accident and never had full comp before
I'll do their defensive driving course though and that'll get me 10% back

Re: Comprehensive Insurance Agreed / Market Value 90 Series

                            HI all,

we just renewed our policy last week with AAMI, only 2nd year round, so no great policy history.

we have a 2000 Prado GXL with the standard bullbar & towbar. but we also have dual batterys, driving lights, tint and LPG conversion included, and 195000 kms on the clock. our renewal was $524 for the year or $624 if we pay by the month. they dropped the value insured from $18k last year to $16.7k this year, fair enough.

however before paying the premuim, and thanks to PP, I quizzed them about "offroad" insuarnce and our coverage. their answer was that on the black stuff or off road, we were covered. to my surprise, we were also covered for mechancial, eg a rock through the sump , and for panel, eg hitting a tree. all in all, i thought that this was fair. there were not any questions of how we drive, eg extreme or easy, bush bashing or a sunday drive. but mind you, i have diary notes and name of the consultant just in case. over the years, i've learnt not to trust anyone on their word.

our car is the wife's daily drive car, we are both over 45 with a lack of previous insurance but no accidents. we live in hinterland Sunshine Coast Qld, if that makes any difference.

i'm like the rest of you, i consider it a waste of $500 but it's a necessary evil.

                            regards Tony

                              Hi Tony and Tracey,

Good call with making the notes about their comments. I spoke to AAMI and asked about "off road use" cause I noted that the PDS didnt specifically say it was or was not covered off road. I was put on hold and they came back and said yes its covered anywhere in oz and a certain distance offshore! go figure.. and I was told "if it doesnt specificly say if its covered or not in the pds... it is!" I'm sure this is the story when getting a quote or paying but skeptical if i'd get the same response making a claim...

I'll keep in mind that you have made notes but hope I never need em.

Lets hope we all don't need to claim and it will all be fine

                              Luke
