  • Front Sway Bar Link - Torn Rubber Boot

    Hi,

Climbed under the car today to look at a few things and noticed my LHS front Sway Bar Link boot has torn. Vehicle is getting a suspension kit (40mm lift) installed in the next week or so, so I will grab one and maybe get them to pop it in at the same time. The rubber looks in good nick, the RHS looks good also but just looked like it has been stretched a bit far and torn. They definitely aren't factory original and have been changed at some time. The front has sagged significantly (40mm below factory) so maybe being pushed in a manner it doesnt like.

    Question I have are:

    1. Must I replace the pair (left and right) or can I replace the torn one only?
    2. I have noticed these are relatively inexpensive on Ebay - Are the Ebay items worthy or should I source from a known reputable automotive parts supplier?
    3. Install looks simple from online vids I have seen. If i chose to do it myself, Do I have to raise both sides and support on stands etc to take the opposing weight off the sway bar?....or can I lift one wheel up at at time to do them?....(I am guessing that the entire front would need to be relieved of weight but thought I would ask to be sure).

    Cheers,
    Bart.

If you are getting a lift you should get extended sway bar links anyway, you will find body roll is a lot worse with the lift and the extended links makes a noticeable difference. The front link pins are the perfect length to replace the rear links, so its a shame one has split, as you could have just bought 2 extended for the front. I would say its worth getting a pair of extended links for the front anyway at the least, if you dont want to fork out for all 4.
Glen_EP from this forum has fabricated front sway bar disconnect links, but he may be out of stock, http://www.rhythmoffroad.com/index.php
Be careful with some of the cheaper ebay ones, the top bush retaining washers have been known to be weak and bend or push over the stop. You could try reusing the original washers if the pin diameter is the same.
Installation is pretty simple, I think i did put the car on stands and used a Jack under the LCA to find the sweet spot without tension.

      Thanks Mate,

Lift is only minor....40mm - Does this constitute a need to increase their length?...or just desirable?

Happy to grab some new ones and throw them in. They aren't that expensive (for standard ones anyway). Will keep my eye out for extended.

      Cheers,
      Bart.

Yep 2" is the max suspension lift you can do on the 90's without diff drop and its recommended to extend the links, the extended links are 30mm longer and will level the swaybar. Of course you don't "have" to, but it will roll more with standard links in, u need to buy a pair anyway, so why not get the longer ones. Not sure which ones are good quality on ebay but the pradopoint store has them for $80.

        or full set.

          Thanks,

We did the front lift today and checked them...No play just the small tear in the boot. Lift came out at about 45mm above standard height (85mm above pre-install height due to old sagged factory springs) so left the original links in.....but will consider lengthening when it comes time to replace.

          Cheers,
          Bart.
