I have 16x7 with -13 offset. There's heaps of space between tyre and UCA's, but the 255's are very skinny in comparison to a 265 or 285 (they actually measure significantly less than 255mm)... Plus the rim has moved out 28mm. In the photo below notice how much of the brake caliper is visible...

Is that an aftermarket upper control arm? Doesn't look like I'll have alot of room to play with if the factory one is anything like that. Hmmm. I'll park one wheel up on the 4 post hoist and flex it right up and have a peak I suppose.

        Yes they're aftermarket UCA's - light racing.

There's a couple guys running 285's you could ask, but I think it's always best to test the clearances out yourself, then you can work out exactly how far you can go with your mods.

          This doc details legal modification limits for wheel, suspension, track size changes etc in VIC;

          http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...orvehicles.pdf

Seems you change track size by 25mm which by my calculations would be -10 (coming from stock +15) for 2000 GXL?

A track increase of 25mm equates to an offset of half that. So if stock is +15, then you can go to +2.5 only.

Yup, NSW has had the same 25mm limit (total), not sure if it's changed recently or not. Their reason was in case of bearing failure. However, I had a chat with a guy who owns an arctic style truck, he said they run offsets from -38 to over -50, and he hasn't heard of bearing failures... so obviously I'm not concerned with only -13.

After having a look and doing some sums I think 285/75/16's on 8" 80 series 0 offset mags will be the go. It looks like the section width part of the tyre is where I may have clearance issues with the upper control arm and on the 80 series rims the section width for a BFG should be about 5mm better clearance than the current 265/75 +15 7" combo I have now, or at worst the same. This should give enough clearance there. Then it will be a matter of just making room in the guards which is nothing new to me or difficult.

                    • Well I've done some more research and it seems that 285/75/16's should clear the control arm on stock rims, just. I had to look on American 4runner forums but the suspension architecture is exactly the same and so are the wheels. Here are some pics I found. That wheel looks exactly the same as the one on my 98 grande and the offset is the same. Worth trying on the stock rims anyway and if it rubs I can always see if I can fix it, get new wheels or even a small spacer. Only need a few mm between the tyre and arm as it moves with the tyre.

                        • Won't be any progress for ages yet, the tyres on it are nearly brand new. Just doing my research on my new purchase so I know for the future.

                          • I'm running the 255/85/16 BFG KM2's on my truck with Nowt more than an Ironman Suspension lift, standard rims, no spacers, no trimming or bashing with no rubbing in everyday use. I do get a little rubbing at the rear when the tyre is fully compressed up into the rear wheel arch and on the front if turning while compressing the suspension, but not enough for me to want to bother doing anything about it. I did however have my caster adjusted to the max of its tolerance pushing the tyre forward a little.

I even have my original front mud guards fitted with out any rubbing issues.

Here's something prety sad I did for myself some time back

                            265/70/16 30.61/10.43/16 standard fitment

265/75/16 31.65/10.43/16 increase in diameter over std fitment 26.42mm extra ground clearence over std fitment +13.21mm (+13.21mm)

305/70/16 32.81/12.00/16 increase in diameter over std fitment 55.88mm extra ground clearence over std fitment +27.94mm (+14.73mm)

285/75/16 32.83/11.22/16 increase in diameter over std fitment 56.39mm extra ground clearence over std fitment +28.19mm (+00.25mm)

255/85/16 33.07/10.04/16 increase in diameter over std fitment 62.48mm extra ground clearence over std fitment +31.24mm (+03.05mm)

This of course make no allowance for how these tyre sizes are effected by rim width & inflation pressure

                              • Hmmm, this has made interesting reading. I have a standard prado TZ, with very worn 265/75/16's on standard 16x7 +15 rims, and looking to replace. Have found a one off deal on a new set of 4 x 285/75/16's muds, but am now a little concerned not having any lift, and don't want to fork out for rims just yet. One big spend at a time. Will get the lift eventually. Besides, my truck spends almost all of it's time on the tarmac for now, so rubbing not really an issue other than when turning.

Here is a great tyre size comparison calculator I like to play around with to compare different tyre/rim/offsets to see what will work that the rest of you may find useful.
