  • BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM/KM2 vs BFG All Terrain T/A KO

    Hi,

I'm going to get a set of BFG's 265/75/16's please no responses pushing other tyres/sizes etc, my mind is made up at least on BFG's.

Has anyone got experience with either the muddies or the all-terrains? I'm not after opinions or what the tyre dealer told you, just what you've experienced.

I'm led to believe the new muddies wear as well as the all-terrains, have similar road noise and go better in the sand than the all-terrains. (Also backed up by recent 4WD Action comparo).

Do the muddies handle well on bitumen? My question mainly pertains to the fact that if the wear rate and on road handling/noise is comparable I would be more inclined to get the muddies to take advantage of the more extreme tread for off-roading.

Anyone read the recent 4WD Action tyre comparo and agree's/disagree's with the findings?

    Thanks in advance.

I don't have BF's but a general rule that applies to ALL mud tyres is they won't perform as well in the sand as all terrains, GIVEN they are at the same pressure as a comparable tyre. It's just the design of them, they'll 'chew' into the sand more and dig you deeper. AT's have more surface area in contact with the ground.

The 4WD action tyre comparo which I read and watched on the dvd had a fair bit of margin for error.

xlr8 thanks for your response. How have you found the wear on your muddies? Would you say they are comparable to an ATR or do they wear quicker given majority road use?

hi, i have a prado series 90, I have been running micky baja claws 285/75/16, they have been fantastic, road noise is very low, normal road use in the wet and dry is fantastic. wear is also great. Sand/mud/slop is also fantastic, never been stuck in anything!! rock and stone is also great, i have never had to run a low tyre pressure as yet. they do need around a 35kph wheelspin to clear the mud and gain traction after getting clogged. you can see a picture here http://www.tough4x4.com/index_files/08052010.htm to see them fitted. price really is from 350 to 400+ depends on your supplier.

Thanks mate, they look the goods. Looks like a great trip you had. I'm sticking with the BFG only because guys in my club are running them and I've seen them perform well... just can't make up my mind as to whether the muddies are comparable to the ATR's since my missus will be driving the fourby to and from work everyday... concerned about handling and tyre wear.

Re: BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM/KM2 vs BFG All Terrain T/A KO

I've got the old style BFG muddies and have been more than happy with them. However, there is a thread on LCOOL about the newer ones that may be able to provide you with a bit more detail.
            http://www.lcool.org/forum/viewtopic...er=asc&start=0

The thread is a bit of a mixed bag of opinions, but thats always the case when it comes to tyres and muddies in particular. There is no doubt, muddies will get noisier as they wear, but to be honest the sound proofing on the Prado almost makes it a non issue (or perhaps I'm going deaf :? ).

I had Banglops on my vehicle when I bought it and toured the south west of WA with our camper trailer and it was a white knuckle ride on some of the winding hilly stretches. Fitting the BFGs transformed the vehicles handling for the better on and off the road. The only times I've had a problem on the tar in the wet is when there has been oil on the road, but it wouldnt matter what tyre you had in those circumstances.

I've been up to the Pilbara (Rudall River/Karijini) twice on the muddies, the first time I had a little too much air in them and they got cut up a little bit. The next time I reduced the pressure and there was hardly any extra wear the second time round. Both times I towed the trailer.

I'm hoping to get around 80-90,000km out of mine, a mate who owned a Patrol claimed he got 140,000km out of a set and he absolutely thrashed them.

At the moment I'm averaging around 12 litres per hundred kilometres, so consumption suffers a little but I'll definately be buying them again if I can afford them. So far no flats either.

Thanks rainman. Sounds like a good purchase. With the improved handling characteristics of the muddies, stated wear rates and better ability to clear mud from the tread in the boggy stuff I'm wondering why bother with the ATR's? The muddies are sounding like a good all rounder and not so purpose specific anymore.

Yeh muddies have been good with wear. I'm 95% of the time on tarmac and they've gone down maybe 1-2mm over 10,000km. That's keeping them at 42psi.
Noise isn't too bad, you can notice it but it's not overbearing.

Re: BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM/KM2 vs BFG All Terrain T/A KO

I have just bought a set of 265/ 75 r16 BF KM2's for my prado. The KM2 doesnt come in the 265/70 size which I think is the standard size.
I ran them on a trip to brisbane from Sydney and I left the tyre pressure at 45psi which was where they were set at the shop. ( I thought it was a bit high). Any way at lower pressures the car felt like I was driving on marshmellows. At 38psi it felt like I was floating across the freeway every time a truck over took me.
This floating feeling was more pronounced at 16psi when I was on Fraser island.

Seems like there is too much flex in the side walls. I dont know if this is a characteristic of the tyre as they are only new and this is the first time I have had the prado loaded up for a trip. I am pretty sure it is not the suspension as the car wasnt swaying and the shocks were on their stiffest setting.

I have had bigger M/T tyres on other cars and run at lower pressures and they never wobbled like these seem to.

Re: BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM/KM2 vs BFG All Terrain T/A KO

I prefer the AT over the MT for a couple of reasons.
                    1. The AT tyres perform better on road than the MT, and if we are all honest..... a lot of our driving in Australia, wherever we live, is on bitumen and dirt/gravel roads...... not in mud.
                    2. I have had issues in the past with sharp rocks peircing the tyre through the bid gaps in the tread on the MT tyres.

This is from someone that has had BFG MT and AT, as well as cooper ST (4 sets) over many many years of 4wd driving.
Just my opinion, but AT tyres always for me, even though the MT tyres do look really sexy.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

Crikeys everyone has a different opinion, i had the ats on my hilux and couldnt get them off quick enough, after 20000 they were over 60% gone and had 7 punctures, but on a brighter note they stuck to the gravel like you know what to a blanket,oh yeh i forgot they chipped bad too, have put a set of km2s on and am really happy only done 4000kms though, im a bit like clarky, have found you have to have more pressure to stabilize thedrift but on that note im running a very high profile 33/10.5/r15, so far KM2s rule, more info after i come back from the cape next month

Re: BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM/KM2 vs BFG All Terrain T/A KO

                        * 90,000km from a set of MT's - 99% shopping trolley - still some tread but concerned about wet tar roads & family using the car.
                        * Sidewalls definitely stiffer than previous Cooper ST's - Coopers also chipped badly, MT's hardly at all
                        * Wet roundabouts an issue if the tar is hotmix & using moderate throttle (worse if not constant 4WD I would assume!) - Also I would imagine emergency braking also an issue - just be aware in the wet - it may not be unusual considering the weight of car & compared to using proper road tire.
                        * When set @ 50psi they are stiff, but I averaged 11.4l/100 on a freeway trip Wagga - Windsor - Wagga - Usually run @ 35 for comfort & day to day stuff.
                        * MT's gives you ( a lot ) more confidence if it looks like rain......

                        Cheers

Re: BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM/KM2 vs BFG All Terrain T/A KO

I had the MT KM's on my 4Runner (have no experience with the KM2's), I got about 70,000 out of them, with about 60/40 on/off road use, I also had AT KO's for a while (were only half worn when I got rid of them, I staked two sidewalls in some roadworks) both were about the same as far as road noise, the MT's were a little squirmier under hard cornering on road, but tracked better in gravel.

I personally give preference to off-road performance over on-road comfort/ handling but that wasn't an issue with either of these, they both handled well enough for me.

I did find that the MT's were MUCH more sensitive to the state of your wheel alignment, if it's out, the blocks feathered on the edges fairly quickly.

I don't think you'll be too bad off regardless of your choice, I've always liked BFG tyres, not as much as my current brand, but you chose well

Sorry about the late reply boz - I've been away.

Wear on my muddies has been great. Driving 99% of the time on bitumen they've worn maybe 1-2mm over 10,000+ km. Really surprised at how they're holding up. As long as you keep the pressures up (mine stay at 42psi) they should last a long time.

Just an addition to my previous post. Finally have done some off roading, and I am liking these KM2's. Felt like I had plenty of grip on sandstone at 16psi.
