On my way up north came across a new Cherokee towing a van with a cooked gearbox. Tried to find some info in his manual about towing as he had no idea that you might need to use different gears, gave up and left him to it in the end.

Why don't you review the Diesel Grand Cherokee while your at it. The motor is a bloody rocket with a quality interior and they look hot! If only it had seven seats and a better reputation. Keep us all in the loop!
I've checked it out Dave but didn't actually drive it because I ain't buying a Jeep.
I just wanted to see what all the fuss is about.

But, bang for buck it's awesome.
The refinement in the cabin embarrasses the Prado. It's up there with the Landrover.
I'll take it for a spin just to be sure.

I'm actually just waiting for the Fortuner to arrive on the 26th.
Then I'll more than likely buy a Prado.

    BTW, how was Bali?

Only thing to note if towing with the Pajero or any IRS vehicle is as the suspension sags or cycles so does the camber angles. So the vehicle is wheel aligned with nothing in it, you load up for a holiday and tow your van for let's say 10,000Km, all of a sudden your near new tyres are stuffed on the inner edge from the misalignment caused by the extra load. Just something to think about if you plan on using it this way. They are a lot of car for the coin though.

    Test drove a Pajero today.
(2 blokes here at work have em and talked me into at least looking)
Not bad, bit noisy compared to the 2.8 Prado but OK.
Then he told me the price, $53k drive away for a GXL. And that's without any haggling.
That's a lot of car for that price.

I think people will compare models on price and what that buys and not whether it is ute based etc. if you are towing a big van then price, pulling power, towing capacity and gadgets will be the selection criteria.

i tend to agree, it is still only essentially competitive with the other ute to cabin suv converted vehicles

Pros. More car like ergos and a lot more tech stuff. The list of standard stuff is extensive. Some examples are auto headlights, auto windscreen wipers, active cruise control, some sort of lane correction thingy and a myriad or 4wd modes. Some aspects of the interior are very nice. The dash is made of some sort of leather look stuff with highlighted stitching. Flash but might not wear well. The dials are great. One analogue speedo in the middle with 2 colour displays either side. And these 2 displays can display an enormous amount of information. Some of it actually useful. That's on top of the 8" display in the centre of the console. I much prefer a standard tailgate than the barn door of a Prado, and the Everest is electric. There's no doubt you get a lot of bang for your buck compared to a Prado.

Cons. Not as quiet as I imagined it would be. Hard to know for sure but I think its nosier than the new 2.8 Prado. Some of the plastic inside feels a bit cheap. Again hard to know for sure but the suspension felt harsher. You felt bumps more than in a Prado. Cabin space seemed a bit smaller. No long range fuel tanks. Its a Ford.

Overall I liked it. I looks good and drives very nicely. They will sell heaps I reckon.

    Some things are odd.
For example, the interior of a Prado looks a bit cheap but when you sit in it the Prado is super comfy.
The Ford on the other hand looks a bit nicer but when you sit in it the Everest feels cheap, or at least not as comfy.
I think that's mainly the seats.

Some things in the Ford are ridiculously over the top.
For example, you can adjust the temperature by either turning the temperature knob, entering the climate controls on the 8" touch screen, by using the controls on the steering wheel or by voice command. Why? There's a few things like that, very hi tech but do I need it?

I was quoted $66k for a Trend with metallic, sat nav, towbar, mats, boot liner, drive away.

The test drive did 2 things for me.
    1. It made me slightly annoyed that the MY16 Prado is so bereft of technology.
    2. It made me curious to see the new Fortuner.

Was it enough to sway me?
    Watch this space......

I saw my first Everest last weekend heading to Noosa, and bloody hell its small! Looks big in photos but up close its compact, narrow and the boot it tiny compared to bigger 4WDs. Ford a kidding them selves comparing this to Prado, its definitely a Challenger Fortuner sized car. Still a nice one, but not for Prado money.

I received two quotes recently. 2.8 Litre auto diesel graphite grey with a tow bar, plastic light covers, plastic bonnet protector, plastic wind shields.
    Broker:-$63050 - recommended by a friend.
    Dealer:-$62990 - Know him personally.

I'm certain that I can get a better price for cash, no trade-in.
Will see what I come up with in a few weeks time.

    Congrats Dave.

Test drove an Izuzu MU-X today.
    Not bad........................ for the money.

There's is something to be said for simplicity.
The engine bay is refreshingly old school, you can actually see the motor.
It looks like something built 15 years ago and looks like you could fix it yourself.
They reckon the engine is good for 500,000 kilometres...

But, its a bit rattly and basic, which is of course it's strength, but I'm not sure I could live with it day in, day out.
The leather seats aren't particularly comfortable and they feel more like vinyl.

They have offered me a car for the day thinking that once I get used to it, I'll forgive its lack of refinement.
    Nup.
