  • 2021 Prado - lower kerb weight?

I have an order in for a Kakadu and the build has just started. Having placed the order on the basis of the latest (Mar 2021) spec sheet, I noticed that the kerb weight in the March 2021 Prado spec sheet is lower than in the Dec 2020 sheet: See

    Dec 2020: https://www.toyota.com.au/-/media/to...ta_DEC2020.pdf

    Mar 2021: https://www.toyota.com.au/-/media/to..._data_2021.pdf

I did a little analysis of the difference in kerb weights (for the tyre-on-tailgate option):
GX 5 seat GX 7 seat GXL VX Kakadu
    Dec-20
    Kerb weight (kg) 2240 2300 2325 2385 2455
    Mar-21
    Kerb weight (kg) 2240 2285 2285 2295 2345
    Difference (kg) 0 -15 -40 -90 -110

These are quite significant reductions in kerb weight for the VX and Kakadu. I've contacted both my dealer and Toyota to verify that the lower, later numbers are correct, and to question where the weight reduction came from. Another thread mentions the switch to 19" wheels, but I can't see how that change would save that much weight, and besides, it doesn't explain the VX / Kakadu difference, nor why there's still a (much smaller) reduction for the GXL. The thing that puzzles me is why put our a spec sheet with just these weight changes plus a few trivial corrected typos if there wasn't a weight change?

Has anyone else noticed this change, which implies a significantly increased payload for the VX and Kakadu?

My dealeship responded that they have no clue about the spec changes. I wonder what Toyta will say.

At least you got a response ...

I got a reply from Toyota and guess what? All they did was email me back a copy of the March 2021 spec sheet that I sent them the link to. I.e. the one with the lower kerb weight, and which still has the 18" wheels for the VX and Kakadu.

What is people's experience with emailing Toyota? Is there any point replying and pointing out that they didn't answer the question? I emailed Guest Existence - was that the best part of Toyota to target?

Just re-send a request again. Could it be a response from a bot?

Possibly. FWIW the response came via email and had a person's name attached.

I'm not convinced that I'm approaching the right part of Toyota. I'm not sure that simply emailing Guest Experience again is going to help. I seem to recall that when there was that issue with the owner's manual not being updated to reflect the upgraded tow limit, people were (eventually) able to get a sensible answer out of them. I wonder how they did that?

Probably just by calling them again. I am waiting for my shipment of my car and curious what specs it has been built for. I hate to think that it lost 40kg somewhere.

Landcrusier 300 is lighter by 200kg due to new welding technology. It could be the case that Toyota will start applying the same technology across the range.

Probably some weight reduction, but don't forget that Series 300 has a 3.3L V6 motor rather than a 4.5L motor. Definitely a weight saving with that change.

                    With or without tailgate?
                    With a tailgate won't have a sub-tank. 70+Kgs of weight.

Kakadu has rear airbags and no springs.

To keep things simple, the figures I detailed in my first post were only for the tyre-on-tailgate option. The tyre underneath option minus the sub-tank obvously has a light kerb weight for all variants, but the same point still applies if you crunch the numbers. There's still the same drop in kerb weight between Dec 20 and Mar 21 for the tyre underneath option.

Comparing apples with apples, the Kakadu is heavier than the other variants, and that seems to be because it has KDSS. It also has the greatest kerb weight reduction between Dec 20 and Mar 21. See my OP.

200kg is a lot to lose just due to welding. I guess it's possible in the LC300, being a completely new design, but in the case of the Prado, it's largely unchanged in spec, so could you really lose that much in welding on an existing design?

As I posted earlier, a big part of the 200kg weight loss for the LC300 is having a 3.3L motor rather than the 4.5L V8 motor.
