  • Looking at buying a 2008 or 2009 Prado diesel

I recently sold my 2002 petrol Prado and now looking to upgrade to a 08 or 09 turbo diesel auto. I have heard horror stories about some of the later model 120's so was wondering if the 08 or 09 models fall into this category. Any advice or thoughts or links to reliable reviews would be appreciated. PoppyG :?:

What are the horror stories you have heard? There was an issue with the Injectors but that was in the early model common rail and these should have been changed over. The later common rail have new design injectors which fixes this issue so th 08 and 09 diesels will be awesome and trouble free.

Hi. All rumours and happy to be corrected. Fuel economy was very average as a result of an increase in body weight and drop in engine capacity and torque not as flash as one would expect. Some review mentioned an inheritant problem with the auto transmission.

We have a 2008 GXL and it still runs like a dream. Would happily buy another over a 150 series.

Can't comment on the Petrol but the late 90 series Diesel (1kZ 96kw) motor was passed into the 120 series until Nov 09 when the new D4D (125kw) came to Australia. The same D4D motor is now in the 150 with a relocated intercooler. Yeah the 120 is heavier but also larger than the 90. The late model 120s have plenty of grunt or if you want to give it more grunt then add a chip and exhaust and you will probably gain another 25%. Top put that into perspective the 100 series TD 1HD-FTE which is bigger and a lot heavier only has 150kW as standard but is easily chipped. At 125kw the power to weight ratio is pretty good and probably excceds the same on the 100 series. The 1KZ prados, depending upon model, weight between 1980 and 2170kgs. I think the D4D was only slightly heavier.

I thought the D4d came in around 2006, not 2009?

Typeo. Yes it was November 06 that the D4D was released in Australia. November 09 was about the start of the 150 with the same D4D but relocated the intercoller from on top to in front.

Hi all, This is my first post so go easy...

Im looking at a 2008 standard D4D, manual, 70k serviced every 10k, 6months rego, white, dual battery, bull bar/ sidsteps / cargo barrier and roof rack.

Its going for an NT AA inspection (we're in Alice Springs) - the guy wants $26900.

Does this represent a good buy , my research says its not bad - so am I missing something????

                      Thanks

The cheapest 120 series models in Brisbane currently go for $26-$27,000, so yes it's a good price. It's good that you're having it inspected for peace of mind too. The low k's would make it a very attractive buy, not to mention the accessories.
2005 120 series V6 Grande, 2 inch susp lift (King/EFS combo), 32 inch MT’s, Safari Snorkel, rear diff lock, breathers, Light Force spotlights, UHF, dual batteries.

                          Thanks,

I drives great and the bodywork is straight so I'm anticipating a positive result from the inspection. Does anyone know the when the major services are on these Prado D4D's and roughly how much that is going to sting me? Thanks again
