  • Newbie here - Hi

Hi from another newbie. Lurked here for a while getting some good info on what to look for. I finally bit the bullet and bought one a few weeks ago. Was tossing up between 150/120 but figured for the price, what you got extra on the 150 didn't make sense to us, so went for a 120.

    Model: GXL Turbo Diesel Auto
    Year: 2008, 80,000km
    Colour: Silver
Accessories: Dual Battery, Battery Monitor, Rear Polyair bags, Roof Bars, Sovereign Bull Bar, Tow Bar, Window Tints, Cooper AT's, EvaKool 55L, Cargo Barrier (fitted next week), Drifta SD Car Back Kitchen (from previous vehicle)
Wishlist: Seat Covers, Finish the Drifta Drawers, Breathers, Snorkel, Spot Lights, Winch, Skid plates, and more depending on finances and the thumbs up from 'El Presidente'...

Will take us a while to get it all on there, but we'll get there.

    • G'day All!

After owning a 2007 1KDFTV Hilux, I steered clear of the Prados with that engine and managed to find a 2004 KZJ120R with about 85,000kms showing.

It's a manual and gutless compared to the Hilux, and I am absolutely thrilled with it. Plus, it's a luxury to not have to carry a mobile fuel laboratory to do onsite tests before filling up. Once you have a injectors run out of specification and have dealers blame the alignment of the stars and the angle of trajectory for bulldust, regardless of who ended up footing the bill, it's a pain to think of having to go through that process again and like some others, the fuel bowser becomes a little bit traumatic.

Though I should mention, being the first fill today, the trauma continues!

Anyway, the 120 is a clean skin with a few minor issues that need attention and along with some upcoming modifications, it will become the vehicle that lets the princess, rug rats and I explore this fantastic continent.

I'm looking forward to pilfering all the knowledge and ideas from those before me and hopefully contribute in my own mechanically-inept way.

      • Welcome jdp, there is wealth of information on this website. Believe me if you cant get/find an answer for any issue you may have, then you must be the first person who has had the problem. There is everything in detail on how to replace wiper blade to major mechanical issues. Good luck with your new beast and hope to see you around........Cheers Steve

        • G'day Everyone,

Well, new Prado owner here. A long-time 4WDer, my last vehicle was a Land Rover Discovery 3 HSE, and although I admit to loving that vehicle, I have had it with LR reliability. So, after a couple of the British brand, this is my first foray into the land of Nippon; less an old Suzuki and Nissan 4x4 used for farm work.

Originally I am from Tassie - and some of the best 4WD available. However, I now reside in Canberra and content myself with the Brindabellas, Snowies and twice yearly trips back home (via Vic High Country). Well, now to the point... Had the Prado about three months, but have been O/S for most of it, so no huge impressions other than happiness! In a nutshell:

          Model: 150 Prado GXL D4D
          Year: Oct 2012
Colour: Metal Storm (dark navy in sunlight; black in shadow)
          Accessories:
BFG ATRs, OME shock and coils, lift, ARB colour coded sahara bar, IPF 900XS (spot and spread), safari snorkel), rhino pioneer platform and racks, REDARC dual battery with 3 x external sockets, black duck covers (rear), sheepskin covers (front), headlight and bonnet protectors, sandgrabber molded mats, Hema Nav (iPad version), F1 tint, side and rear awnings.
Wish list: Underbody protection, diff breathers, rear cargo drawers
Next drive: Vic High Country via Great Alpine Road and Dargo, Tassie East Coast and North East Coast, Flinders Ranges.

Cheers and good to be here

            • I am Terry - currently driving my favourite town car a Honda Euro which has been to many remote places and I don't treat it well.

However retrire on Sept 13 - first task buy a 2008-09 D4D Prado and a camper trailer. Spend heaps fitting them out and then off to the Flinders anges as a test of me and my spouse, daughter and dog. (Dog will be left in kennels in PA).

Have learned a lot already from this fantastic site. Old dogs can learn new tricks - but only if they listen.

              • Hi everyone,

Have just become the owner of a 2006 silver petrol/gas grande. Drove it for the first time yesterday and love it. Have changed from a 100 series cruiser diesel and am enjoying the quiet of the engine. I have loved visiting this site for a while before my actual purchase and have found alot of useful information.....Thankyou.

My current wish list is a bullbar and spotties.

                  • Hello people,
Sorry I am new to this and posted in My Rig Build Ups first.
I work as a Project Technician in Offshore oil and Gas in the Timor sea and have a wonderful Wife and 4 fantastic kids who all love 4 wheel driving.
I have just brought a Galactic Grey Mica 2008 D4D GLX PRADO with 118250 km on the clock. This is my second 4x4, my other being a 2007 100 series Landcruiser GLX 4.7 l V8 Petrol getting 22 litres per 100 km and that is country driving, go anywhere and quite done up, but cost a fortune to do so. (photos of it in My Rig Build Ups) Hence the reason for buying the Prado and decided to join your Forum to mix with like minded people.
The Prado is relatively stock just with the following:

                    Sovereign bull bar,
                    Light force 240 blitz Spotties
                    Tinted windows
                    Side steps
                    Tow bar
                    BFG All Terrain TA's 265/70/17
                    New front discs and pads
                    Factory floor mats
                    Sand Grabber rubber mats
LED interior Lighting and door lighting
                    Head light protectors
                    Bonnet Protector
                    Maxtrax
                    ARB recovery Kit
                    ARB Tyre repair kit
                    KCI air Compressor
                    Staun tyre deflators

much more to come in the near future.

                    • Another newbie here. Picked up my first 4x4, 2013 ZR, last week and done about 400k since then.
I've been telling my friends that I got a truck, not a car .
When I was thinking about a new car - I was very close to getting Golf R as I wanted a smaller car, from XR6T. Then, I was thinking if I were to pay close to 70k, then I want something that can go around this country. I don't see Golf R is doing that. Then FJC. It was - not very roomy, too high, even for me to get in and out, though, side steps can be installed. Finally, saw shorty Prado. It fits my what wanted, not a family wagon/SUV , being ZR - got all the gadgets for newbie like me to help out, I hope.
Still getting use to the size of the car, haven't got a chance to reverse or parallel park it yet.

                        • Hi All

Very much a newbie here. Although I have driven off road quite a bit over the years, never what you would call serious 4x4 tracks and rarely in a proper 4x4, mainly dirt roads. Close to retirement so thought a good look at those out of the way Australian locations was in order.

We are now the proud owners of a 2012 GXL Prado 150 D4D, Blue Storm is the colour (always reminds me of Zoolanders Blue Steel look ).
Camper Trailer will be built and delivered in August with freedom looming at the end of 2014.

Just after Easter come the mods. Followed by a 4x4 driving course, so as not to completely embarrass myself when I join a club.
Looking forward to participating in various discussions.
