That was a good post Li. Provide good customer service and you will go a long way. Currently I am using Alpine Quest and Memory Map (mainly for marine navigation) for Android. I was waiting on Hema releasing an app for Android but nothing as of yet.

Li, will there be a version of Mud maps for Android? I know with Memory Map I can download Hema maps but it costs $199US for all of Australia. For marine applications it costs $199US for half of Aust or $299 for all.

I have used Ozi Explorer but didn't like it that much as it's too hard for the wife to use.

The option of us uploading our tracks so you can add it to future updated maps is a good idea

Good response, and theres continuing support for the old product which should not see any 'justified' complaints from those that bought HD on sale, after all it was cheap.

So a bit like open source, but not quite, your asking the 'community' to provide data and information and then providing that information collated, yet unlike open source yours is then provided for the princely sum of $150? Did i get that right? Oh and for $150 im getting maps that obviously need improvement and upgrading?!?!? As you admit since you have released it your trail lengths have doubled thanks to the users only, maybe the price should have halved, to correspond with that.

I must be missing something but your supplying 25 year old maps (qld) asking the user to improve those maps and charging them for doing it?!

So when all tracks are mapped whats your fee for the software then, very very smart approach, well done.

Crikey, just when I think about upgrading from my old Magellan Triton GPS, along comes this idea. Too many choices. Anyway, too late for my next trip as I depart next week.

I have both HEMA and MM and agree with most that "out of the box" HEMA wins but I do like the option of adding other maps to Mud Map, e.g. Westprint, Vicmap.

PS I am sorry if I missed your point as I suspect you may have been speaking its a little tongue in cheek.
Ignoring the whole sale thing, I paid Full price on the VMS / Mud map changeover cusp. I bought it on the reputation of VMS! Full price at $150. Frankly, I don't give a flying F%$^ what the new version does, how dare they develop a new product platform so I must pay again, its that F34King simple.

I would gladly remove the app and take my money back for a product that will no longer be developed. I DID NOT buy something to be superceded, only Microsoft gets away with that shit.

Your a corporate leach Li, pure and simple.

It's certainly not our intention to keep you guys in the dark about Mud Map 2. We did out best to inform everyone in the 4WD community about it's availability.

                  • A full page ad for Mud Map 2 appeared in 4WD action magazine in April, a full month prior to the launch of Mud Map 2.
                  • An editorial in Camper Trailer Touring magazine was release in late March.
                  • Press releases were sent out in March to all relevant publications, but it is up to the editors to decide what gets published.
                  • we had this large banner on the home page of our website 1 week before the Mud Map 2 was available.

OpenStreetMap is open source, the data belongs to the community. When you submit contributions, you are contributing to the OSM database. In fact we encourage anyone to use the data and do something really cool with it.

Raw data is not very useful to the end user. Where we provide the value is taking that data and providing it in a useful way, like drawing maps on an iPad, and online.

To do this, a new vector map engine was built from the ground up so that Mud Map 2 can display detail up to 1:5,000, heaps more detail than any 4WD raster map. This makes up a large part of what you pay for. We host processed data and provide free monthly map updates that can be downloaded by Mud Map 2 for offline use.

Now we are working on tools that will help the gathering, editing and verification of map data easier and more accessible. So part of the revenue is reinvested into tools for the community to improve data quality with the goal of creating the most detailed and up to date off-road map of Australia that everyone has access to.

So in summary, you are not paying for the data, what you are paying for are the layers on top that makes the raw data more useful.

With Mud Map 2, you don't need to make that choice. It let's you use digital maps you already own. Best of both worlds.

This feature is included with the app so it's ready to roll out of the box. So if you have maps in OziExplorer, GeoTiff or ecw formats, you can can convert and then import them into Mud Map 2.

The old saying goes that a satisfied customer will tell a friend , a dissatisfied customer will tell 10 . I took this approach when I took on Quintrex and the largest boating retailer in the country . And got my 15 k back after 2 years of fighting . They didn't like the publicity I was giving them . That was even before this fan dangle Internet thingy where yo can reach tens of thousands of people in an instant. Cheers .

Kav, I don't take well to a feeling of being conned/ripped off/call it what you like. After a month or so I have directed 6 customers to Hema (confirmed purchases). I will continue this campaign for life or until I get my money back, or MUD MAP 2 is free for existing customers. It is unacceptable to change any platform that means anyone that pays $150 for an iPad App does not get the Mud Map 2 benefits. Lets not forget that new users cannot now buy this redundant product. That's because its REDUNDANT and all existing buyers of one of the most expensive apps are left with a product that will in a few years be abandoned or at least ignored when critical mass is achieved on the new product. How can any existing consumer or new consumer ever trust them????

Now I know that 72 or so customers a year that Mud Maps lose as a result of say some conversations around a camp fire is nothing, even over 10 years its nothing. Unfortunately for them, there are a lot of people that share the same feeling as me and I suspect that the combined result will have an impact. Even if it doesn't that's ok too because I'm the only person I need to compensate through my expression and opinion.

And for the record, I have not even started on using the "interweb thingy whatsit" yet. The greatest thing about negative publicity is it works much more effective than the advertising dollar. I will be typing the name Mud Map 2 in at every negative occasion so it shows up in peoples searches from now on!!

Perhaps the next 150,000 viewers of my rig build page will get a very clear message of what NOT to buy .

Well time to add some length to other forums telling it how it is.

I bought mud map hd in Jan 2011, then it was the vms app, have used in all my trips over the past 2 years and have found it a great gps app.

When I heard about mud map 2, I was like everyone else and concerned about the on going life mmhd will get but after reading Li's posts and proof that it's going to get on going updates has put by concerns to bed. The new fraser island map is fantastic, lots of camping and 4wding related pois. And having provided feedback that iphone 5 support is needed, and getting that with this update is much welcomed.

It shows the company is obviously commit to supporting mmhd and users.

Some features of mm2 are appealing, themap looks interesting, and adding ozi maps is pretty cool. These are new features, and i'm sure Li has spent lots of time developing. It's only fair that they can earn some revenue for the extra work, so having a separate app is fine.

Think of updates as a service to your car. Broken things get fix, minor adjustments here and there. With a car, we pay for services, but in case of software, it's expected for free, and that's fine.

Major new versions with new features is like buying a new model. That's how companies survive and products get better. Without this revenue, they go broke and that's not good for either side.

Midlife, why is it reasonable to expect new features for free. Is toyota greedy because they release new models? Did you get a free upgrade to a 150 series for free?
