  • Windscreen chip repair

I got a stone chip the other day that is slightly smaller than a $1 coin. I had it repaired but the chip is still visible, looks the same and is quite distracting. I was told by the repairer that it would still be visible - but much smaller. I was expecting to be only able to see a small dot where the repair was done.

Back in the UK a visible stone chip in the area covered by the windscreen wipers would cause the car to fail its annual inspection. For this reason I would have had to replace the windscreen even after the repair as the stone chip is clearly visible and is within the area covered by the wipers.

Is it OK to drive the car like this or do I have to get the screen replaced here as well?

It depends on the tester & their opinion.
If it distracts you, replace it.
I'm about to give up on repairs, may as well spend the extra 130 & get a new one.
Much better than a sandblasted screen.

I tried one of those windscreen repair kits and it worked well. Cost me $30 and I cannot see the chip. The issue is if the object has gone through the first layer and cracked the second then you won't be able to fix it completely and it will still be partially visible.

same here, have repaired 6 stone chips so far myself with those $30 kits from Super Cheap. They look as good or better than the ones I got someone out to repair. The big thing is to do it in the shade, make sure it's not too dirty and be patient in letting the sealant/glass soak into the crack. Fixed moon shaped ones, star ones ans even a great big crack that i have in the middle which has not grown or moved in 20,000k's.

You should only see a small black half moon type shape about a few mm's in size when it's finished.

Carry on of the repair packs in both cars now, just pull over find a shady spot, fix, wait 15min's and then drive off like nothing has happened.

My 'Professionally Repaired' chip is 22mm across and very obvious after the repair!

Just got a call from the glass company regarding the less than perfect feedback score I gave them.

Very nice guy who said that regardless of how good/bad the repair was if it was distracting then they would simply replace the windscreen. Booked up for it to be done next Tuesday. I'm guessing they will stick the Dashcam back on the same as the rear view mirror?

They should do the mirror, might be pushing your friendship with the dash cam though.

Fortunately the deal Stevejau kindly got for PP members did include a spare sticky pad so all is not lost if they don't.

2 chips then a cracker of a crack, and I got a new screen in Perth from Avanti Windscreens. Top job very happy, no scratches and original rubber looks so good you cannot tell. Lost my next service sticker though !!
