To answer your questions: Firstly, I believe Police should be working with communities and industries to achieve a greater good and standard in society through a balance of consultation, education and enforcement where appropriate. Thus hopefully we can better reduce road trauma, crime or other respective areas such as liquor and gaming. I believe there is a lot to be gained in a collaborative approach in policing especially with certain industries that become mutually beneficial for all parties and greater public.
Secondly: Yes it was demoralising and frustrating at times, especially with the leniency and inconsistency of courts or probation and parole. I eventually lost a lot faith in the Judicial system. The way I kept going was telling myself that as long as I did my job to the best of my ability and brought these offenders before the courts then I was doing good and the right thing. However.....whatever sentence the judge decided on was on his conscience and societies as they ultimately accept it. Dare I mention Jill Meagher murder in Melbourne or recently the coward that sucker punched a teen whilst on good behaviour killing the teen in SYDNEY then getting 4 years .... Really!!!! What message are we sending out there for taking a life? what deterrent? Yes at times as you'd put all this work into a brief of evidence to have the matter proved and dismissed or the offender given a pathetic sentence which you felt embarrassed as well as sorry for the victim and their families. Sadly, I remember joking with the Dectectives outside of a court, they had a druggie on an aggregated break and enter (injured victim in break in) Assault OABH, demand money by menace. My matter was: refuse supply blood test Drive Under influence Drug, self administer heroin, drive manner dangerous (high speed chase 15min) 99 x goods in custody (loot in the boot and car) and two break and enters. Detectives peanut got released on good behavior and drug rehab programe for belting a person in a break and enter and bashing them to get a PIN on credit card. Whilst mine got Gaoled on the traffic matters whilst the criminal matters where pathetic with no consecutive sentencing all served concurrent so in short let off and a waste of time
So yes T303 it's sounds all too familiar, you really do get more by working with than against whether it be the police, dept, or industry body etc- all benefit mutually by a collaborative approach. Cheers
