  • Shell Diesel ???????????

Can I just say that the other day I filled the 150 up at almost empty and only got 95ltrs in. I was expecting 130ltrs. I drove 5kms to a BP post fill up and fitted in another 40 ltrs.
Never again Shell it happens too often.

If the fuel is hot it will foam. Try filling first thing in the morning.

When willing up always use half pressure on the trigger to alleviate froth and keep a slow steady fill.

          Yes major frothing issues.

It was not an overly hot day.

Doesn't seem to happen with BP fuel though

Coincidence, that it only happens at Shell maybe, a common problem
is the flap sticking in the filler tube preventing one tank filling, maybe
yours is somewhat stuck, driving the car for awhile transfer fuel from
the full tank to the not full one and allows the other to be filled maybe?

Just a thought if it starts to happen at BP too?

its not the fuel, its the size of hole/aperture which causes the air to mix/foam as it is expelled from the tank.

I use caltex, shell and bp diesel only on my side-mount truck tank and none of them ever foam because there is lots of room for the air to escape out of the giant open filler.

That's all good if you are young and fit. I find my hand starts to cramp up whilst holding the handle. I prefer to use BP where they still have the ability to lock the handle on. Most servos have removed that function now except for the high flow truck pumps. I got told off for wedging the filler cap into the handle at a Caltex Woolies outlet.

I have a split pin in the centre consol of the prado, all the triggers have the holes in them to lock the flow, just needs some sort of pin for the latch to lock on. They have three holes in the handle too, so using a lower hole will lock it on to half flow or there abouts. A nail or bit of fencing wire would work too. Sneaky servos....

I found that Vortex Caltex and BP ultimate never froth, Shell does most of the time. So I stick on those two. And I don't use the Hi flow nozzle as I never run mine less than quarter, if I have a chance to fill up.

I too have a pin than I use to hold the trigger on. When you are putting in 100+ litres on a slow fill pump its makes it easy on the hand. Just don't let the operator see you as they will probably pick you for it - they tried to tell me it was dangerous one day but could not justify it.

It is illegal to have the latch lock on with petrol fuels, due to the dangers of static electricity/spark. But on a diesel pump is perfectly fine to use.

So why do they all seem to remove the latch?

I only use BP Ultimate Diesel - no foaming at all, although I am curious to why anyone is using diesel from other servos than BP? My understanding is that we need to run a min cetane level of 48, BP is the only diesel that comes close to this rating. Caltex, Shell from what I can find is at the min Aus standards of 46. Now that Ultimate Diesel is available in Melbs, I only use that its rated at cetane level of 52.

Don't look at me, I'm Gen X, we are stuck in the middle of all this....

Cetane has been discussed plenty of times before and all diesel sold in Australia meets the requirement for our engines. There are 2 numbers regarding Cetane, the Cetane index and the Cetane number, they are a few points different and some people are confused between the two. 45 is the standard required and as you point out the "minimum" Australian standard is 46.

As for only using BP, what if you live in a town that only has a Shell? Tom Price in WA would be a good example, Shell is the only option and every second vehicle is a D4D Prado or Hilux.

Best you don't take your Prado Outback if you only want to use BP, lots of places where you don't have that choice

                              Cheers Andrew
