  • 4WD Insurance - Who to choose??

Hi all, I am sure this topic has come up before, I just wasn't able to find any posts recently...

My Prado has been insured with CGU since I owned it. When I brought it I was not doing any 4WD'ing so didn't give that part of their policy any consideration...

Now that I am doing a bit off off-roading and touring I am starting to get a bit concerned about not having adequate insurance...

Just curious which companies different people are using, and perhaps any claims stories to back up those companies that you may have choses??

    Thanks,

    Rob

I use Affinity and they insure all my mods and my car is insured for an agreed vale not market value... It is also insured anywhere in Australia not just gazetted roads like many insurances. pay a little more but in my mind its worth it

I think you'd be hard pressed to find an insurer that would only insure cars on 'gazetted' roads. Every insurer I've looked into will cover you anywhere in Australia as long as you are in an area that you have permission to be in - be it a public road, a National Park, someone's farm or your own driveway.

Be careful with Coles insurance. I'm with them for my misses car but not the prado. I can't remember the exact question I asked but it related to taking the prado off road and to the various Queensland beaches and islands. Basically they didn't cover for that so I'm not with them

Their cheap but definitely some limitations

Yeah - I am covered anywhere in Australia but specifically not Landcruiser Park or a race track.

Have heard of some insurers only considering High Tide Mark as Australia. So get caught out on Fraser below that and you are not insured. My Camper Trailer is with CIL and is specifically not covered below the High Tide Mark

Interesting, seeing as the Fraser beaches are official public roads.

Hi Raven, yes they are they've just revised my quote down to $430 !!! by upping the excess to $550 and doing away with a hire car, for me this is a winner as I dont go off road much, having said that thier home ins' was dearer but you cant have it all so happy with that.................

Might have misremembered but the guy on the phone told me it meant pretty much we weren't covered below high tide mark. Just checked actual wording for the CT.

"Part 4 – Loss, damage or legal liability....We do not insure you for:....loss or damage caused by a high tide or king tide"

(also not covered for any damage caused by any actions of the sea)

Comments about some companies not insuring below High Tide Mark came from this forum:

Anyone here use APIA? They are substantially cheaper than quotes for the same cover I've received from RACV and AAMI and car is covered anywhere it's legally allowed to be.

I just switched from NRMA to YOUI for my 2004 prado 120, NRMA were slogging me $1150/year for agreed value of 21k windscreen damage and standard car hire. YOUI is market value plus 4k of aftermarket mods, windscreen and roadside assistance for $680/year.

I was also worried about beach and offroad tracks but YOUI assured me that they cover my 4wd for places it's intended on being used excluding private 4wd parks which is on par with other companies.

Hopefully if the time comes i won't have a issue with them
