  • Lockable Space Cases: Recommendations / Good or Bad Experiences

About to buy a large space case that must be lockable to go on the roof rack. The purpose is to hold spare parts for the long haul trips such as Adelaide to the Cape and back. Approximate siz (subject to measuring the actual roof rack) is 1 metre by 500 by 450 ish....

Would welcome any recommendations and experiences people have had.

    Thanks

The 'SpaceCase' brand was manufactured by Trimcast. Trimcast was bought out by Pelican a few years ago. You can buy Pelican cases now at Bunnings, cheapest I have seen them. Bunnings web site says 'special order' but most Bunnings stock them in store. They are virtually unbreakable and dust/water proof. I have owned many over the years and they have never failed me.

        1040 x 450 x 450 would be close to your requirements. Weighs 14.5kg and $299 at Bunnings
        http://www.bunnings.com.au/pelican-1...case-_p5810351

Personally, i think that 450mm is a bit high for the roof. Around the 310mm height would be a good compromise in terms of wind drag and ability to reach into the box while standing on the side steps/wheel/etc.

I have this one mounted along the side of the roofrack and I can just peer into it standing on the tyre (not the spare tyre)

Thanks AMTS. I was thing of running it longitudinally front to rear to reduce wind resistance. I will have a look at both before making a decision. Do you lock yours and have you fixed yours to the rack?

The latches have loops in them to fit a padlock. I drilled through the bottom of mine and bolted it down to the channels of my Pioneer Platform.

I picked up a couple of Pelican 780mm (L) x 380mm (W) x 380mm (H) cases from Bunnings for $149. I wouldn't want to go any bigger with spares as it was quite heavy when filled up with my spares. I strapped them down with 2 ratchet straps and they didn't budge the whole trip. Never locked mine. Having it across ways at the back made it easier to access from the rear when standing up on the drawer system.

Beware if you're travelling up the cape (or anywhere with severe corrugations for that matter) and carrying fluids in your spacecase. Near the end of my trip I opened it up to pull out my nice new clean Air Filter and A/C Pollen Filter to replace before the trip home on the Blacktop. I hadnt needed to access the case for about 10 days and when I did, I found that my 5 litre container of coolant had split and emptied into the bottom of the spacecase. This had become a washing machine! anything that was cardboard (the box that my replaced alternator was in, the box my bottle jack was in and a few other bits) had become sludge that was through everything! including both filters that were on boxes and plastic bags! Bah!!!! Took me 3 hours to pull everything out, clean it down and put back. Insulation & duct tapes, Silver seal cannisters, impact drill, the list goes on! recommend you put these things in individual zip lock bags to separate should this type of thing occur!

                        Lesson learnt....

There are also smaller cases from Supercheap if you wish to separate the fluids from the rest
                          http://search.supercheapauto.com.au/...?w=safe%20case

There's a Plano 102L in the link above that is similar in size to the 780x380x380 Pelican case from Bunnings. Half the price but not as tough.

I have one of the Rhino ones in the back ground and its been super. No dust or water in it ever, it has a great rubber seal around the lid and lockable too.
