Yep it has a diesel particulate filter and exhaust gas re circulation, blah blah...and yes that means less emissions for now...but longevity of the engine is doubtful, and engine oil; has to be low ash and thin etc etc....might be the last new diesel I think about getting to be honest.

Does that mean the new Hilux is the same?

My father had a DPF on his Mazda. We had nothing but issies with it. Definitely puts me off but only time will tell.

I have only just taken ownership of a new 2.8 (auto) and it is still early days for me to judge . My previous car was a Kluger (V6), and whilst flat out performance is obviously less, the 2.8 seems responsive for day to day driving (even before run in) and very quite when cruising. The long term performance of the DPF is obviously unknown, but I did notice the car held 4th gear for a while on the freeway, which might have been a DPF cleaning cycle.

In performance terms the 2.8 does its job pretty well as far as I'm concerned. I compare it to other 4wd's ive owned, the nissan 2.5L and Mitsubishi 3.2L and there isn't really much in it in my opinion. Would I like the performance of the V6? Absolutely, but the fuel consumption would get to me eventually, even if it did cost less to buy initially.

After a month or so of owning the new Prado I have no issues with the 2.8 auto performance. I previously had a Mits PB Challenger 2.5 TD auto and it was a slug in comparison. I also just spent a week in NZ driving the new Ford Ranger TD auto - power wise I found it comparable to the Prado, however the big difference was the auto, the Ranger constantly felt like it was in the wrong gear and randomly dropped back reving its nut off. The engine was also quite noisy. The Prado IMO is a much more refined and a nicer car to drive.

              I agree with Lski
I've had my 2.8 Auto for a few weeks and the performance is great
Far better than another DPF vehicle I had - C(r)aptiva TD which I had issues with

when or if the DPF stuffs up and engine light comes on and goes into limp mode in the middle of nowhere you won't be happy.

                  just like my truck did.

It will never happen its a Toyota :-). Seriously if you get the exhaust hot enough frequently enough I don't think there is going to be an issue for quiet sometime. $3500 for a new DPF, hope it lasts at least 5yrs.
