Prado vs Kangaroo

Saw this at a servo in Broken Hill. Poor guy hit a roo north of Broken Hill, no phone reception and at dusk. They decided to keep driving. Unfortunately, the radiator had been punctured, so eventually the engine seized. Probably a write off now.





We had a half dozen near misses, even though we avoided driving at the danger times.

Yeh i would not be travelling the outback without one. Basically if you just drive around the city then fine, but for any interstate trips or especially out in the bush the normal plastic and foam bumpers on most 4b's just don't cut it.

I've seen a Prado with bullbar after a roo strike, bull bar was fine but Prado was stuffed.

Depends on size of kangaroo, the height level of the mass of the roo at impact point, the speed of the vehicle, and strength of the frontal protection bar.

We've hit several kangaroos, the largest was in the flinders at near sunset at 110kph. The roo was hit at the drivers front side and then luckily he went under the vehicle, not over it or things would have been disastrous. The Prado bounced all over it, and basically no damage except for one of the bullbar foglights.

If that was with no bullbar, the Prado would definitely have been trashed like the photos above.

I've smashed heaps of Roo's and so far only damage is a cracked fog light shroud on ARB bar and one smashed spotlight another time. ARB bar has held up awesomely.

its a playdo with a bull bar

not a kenworth or a tank is my point

some peeps this a bar is like a supersonic force fields that has magical powers that simply defy the laws of physics makes me laugh

Except, we are not comparing a kenworth/tank with a Prado.

We are comparing a Prado without a bullbar, to a Pardo with a steel bullbar. In almost every case, the Prado survives with the bar, but the prado without the bar is likely to have considerable damage. The front panels of a Prado are plastic, the first thing a roo will hit is likely to be the radiator which is also likely to destroy the engine.

Nope, just good ol' logical common sense. I assume you're referring to the pro/cons argument of a Bull Bar. Sometimes common sense works. Yep, the car could have been hugely damaged with or without a bull-bar - but the radiator would have a far less chance of being punctured. Can't back that up with some two-bit over-quoted survey - I'm just using common sense. More heavy steel in front of the Radiator.

I had a good look at the damage and the transmission cooler was pushed onto the AC condenser which was pushed onto the radiator. There were only a few little punctures and if anything, they were unlucky and a bullbar, even a nudge bar, might have been all the difference.

There was a suggestion by the servo manager that the Prado owner's 'ethnicity' may have contributed to the seriousness of the situation...

We drove from Hawker in SA, through Broken Hill to Cobar a couple of weeks ago, then to Bourke up to Cunnamulla....and if it wasn't the herd of goats, it was the flocks of emus, other families of pigs or the masses of Roos....seriously glad I had a bull bar. 👍

ok i grew up & was borne and bred on musharoo & rosedale stations plus a few more around tilpa area whilst family worked for a very well know family up that way -- old grandpa managed tilpa for 3 years and my parents had emmdale ... mum was nurse for RFDS

doing 110 at sunset/sunrise is a pore choice

we have traveled back from wilcannia at 40kmps due to goats roos pigs etc DRIVE TO CONDITIONS

best vehicle in that country is a zuke specially when its wet!!!

we mostly run luxes up that way but "Crab Hole" country demanded cruiser utes cos the lux chassis broke when you fell in one charging through the scrub - (usually chasing pigs with visitors in toe)

makes me laugh listening to the stockyard confettie on here but

how i miss the red dirt!

dont get me wrong we run bars but didn't think the were a magic force field

more a place to hang accessories

locals also dont tend to hunt mud rather if forced to go though it due to supplies or medical reasons did so with regret - and if at all possible waited ....

wouldnt make good TV or magazines

Again, we were talking about a Prado with or without a steel bullbar hitting a roo.

I know which I would prefer.
