Don't diss the Jayco too quickly...... its like anything you own (including the Prado) you will play with it until it suits your needs, northing comes 'off the shelf' set up just the way you want it.
I'm not surprised at all with Viper's stock Jaycos performance.
Personally, having owned our Outback Eagle for 3 years, it is now set up for that sort of travel.... everything underneath is either tiucked away or protected, the whole van has been re-wired and LED's installed throughout, we have solar power, Oh and a hurricane vent, which helps keep 90% of the dust out by pressurising the van whilst under way...... and having bought ours second hand at less than $15k it offers great touring comfort, at a price which rivals most CT's.

    Just food for thought.

.... and that's the whole point of an effective forum ...... there's a wealth of thoughts and ideas ..... and an acknowledgement that its 'horses for courses'.

Most of us find that someone else's solution or choice of product is not quite a perfect fit for us ..... but being able to see so many options sure makes shopping a lot more fun

I love the Jayco's ... but went with a CT.
If you've seen the size of my kids you'll understand why I needed expandable canvas walls.

Couldn't agree more with Cippy and Rob....

Rob, I am interested in this "Turbo Vent" you refer to.

How does it work? Where is it fitted? Where did you get it? How much?????????? You know all the usual stuff.

          D4Dazz,

It is called a Hurricane Vent, used a lot in boating, and you will pick up one in most ship chandlery outlets, like Whitworths. Try this link; http://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemd ... lutePage=1 The idea is by forcing air into the van whilst moving (pressurising) it stops dust ingress, and the general concensious is it works very well (Not 100%...... but close)

Also have a read through the various threads on the JUGA (Jayco user group) forum, http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/JUGA/message/5425
          here is an extract;

I installed the Whitworths Hurricane vent several years ago. I will
try to answer your questions as best as I can.

          Q. Are we talking about the vent sourced from Whitworths or are there
          other brands?
          A. I don't know of any other product other than the one sold by
Whitworths. I presume you may be able to source it from another
          supplier.

          Q. How big is the hole (approx) you have to make in the roof?
          A. I think its 69mm (I was chatting to graemebll on this site a few
days ago about this very topic he will be able to confirm that size?)

          Q. Is the roof solid or hollow, and if hollow how do you locate any
          framework to avoid cutting it?
          A. Where I cut (see my previous post) it was foam insulation with
aluminium skins on either side. I spoke to Jayco before cutting and
was told where I was cutting there was no framework.

          Q. What is the thickness (approx) of the roof from outside top to
          inside ceiling?
          A. To be honest I can't remember - approximately double the depth of
the hole saw I used. You can get an idea by looking at the roof.

          Q. Has anyone road tested the vent while raining. IE water ingress
          thru vent?
          A. Yes - many times driving 100kph + in driving rain and no water
ingress. Camped in torrential rain and no water ingress. This
product is designed (in Australia) for the deck of a boat that gets
          awash with water.

          Q. Is one vent sufficient to keep out dust or would more be better?
          A. Mmmm - never thought about it. The one I have does the job OK.

Its a big call to cut a hole in a new camper. At the time I didn't
really know whether it would work or not. Several years ago I
followed a similiar thread on a US site and decided to give it a go
(my CT was only a few months old at the time) It seems to have
worked for me as I don't get much dust inside the CT and definitly no
water via the vent. I must qualify that I do get dust but hardly any
and certanly not as much as is often discussed on this and other
sites. All I can say is it is better than what I used to get.
          Hope this helps

Okay, I apologise, maybe I was a little hasty in my decision. I will give both earnest consideration, hire both and decide from there.

                    Rob,
I would be interested in hearing what you did to improve the underbody protection on the Jayco. I was thinking of getting all the pipes, wires and tubes up aa high as possible, then cover it all up with some checker plate.

Re: New Jayco Outback About To Be Ordered

Your on the right track Dazz,

The stone protector for the water tank is too light, replace it with checkerplate, and carry it back the full length. Make it wider, so you can tuck the joints for the water filler in behind it as well.
Encase all your wiring in split plastic tube, and cable clip it all up (with HEAPS) of clips, so it runs behind the cross members (protects it from flying stones)
If you want to get flash, ... the stone protectors for the shocks are too short, replace with longer & wider home made versions..
Make up a seperate 'shield' for the water pipe as it comes across to the tank, checker plate works well here as well.
Its all about just looking for the vunrabilities....

While you're at it check the routing of the handbrake cables - if they still lead them through cut outs in the cupboards under the kitchen sink suggest you tape/block thes up as well, otherwise dust coming in thru the fridge vents will fill the cupboards under the sink and club lounge.

Just spent a few hours at Jayco St Marrys. They have their birthday sale on atm. I was looking at the Eagle outback and the sales person was suggesting around $23,500 drive away. I wasn't able to talk him down so I walked. I may go back tomorrow and try again. I am trying to determine what a good price is. Can anyone help? I really don't want to pay anymore that $20K. I have read on here that some of you are paying between $18,500 - $20,000. That's what I would be happy with.

                            Cheers

Hey Andy, We paid $23,000 last December for our outback Hawk First qoute was $25,000. We also got awning with walls, bed fly's, microwave, drop jacks, gas bayonet fitting near the rear hatch, boat racks and a free 15" LCD T.V, all hoses, pipes and connections plus all on roads. The salesman told us the more options you get the better price he can do.
If it makes you feel any better had a look at Jayco in Darwin today 2009 outback Hawk a couple of options $28,990. Hope this helps

                                Andy,

New is great....... but there are some real bargins out there for 1 or 2 year old models. I would think for somewhere between $15k and $20k you will get something pretty special.

I paid under $15k for mine when it was 2 years old in 2006..... you may even (as I did) pick up a few modifications that are worth having.
