It's not the suspension height that is the problem for most of us- The underlying issues here are that all of us who have changed tyres have unroadworthy vehicles.

I'm interested in what is required to prove that bigger tyres haven't affected the ESC in the vehicle.

The suspension height IS a problem for many of us even if we are on the standard size tyre. A 50mm lift is a VERY variable figure depending on brand of spring and shock, load, fuel full or empty etc . Just have a look at the data base to see the variability of 50 mm lifts, especially at the back . This is why we need the accurate trim figures to see if any of us with lifts are as legal as we think we are and if there is any leeway.

Yes I agree with much of what is said on this thread , i dont have a standard hieght of my old prado to see how high really is my lift ,its supposed to be 2'' as my rear is higher than the frount im very curious . I would imagine the standard height on the 90/120/150 models would all be different . but with this we can simply see if we are over with a simple measurement.

Tonz from Glen's questionaire on FB, most stock 90's numbers are 540 front and 550 rear.

I wonder how many of the new dual cab utes that come from dealers with big rubber and flash alloy rims are legal ?

I think its worthwhile to expand these links.... These are the Road Vehicle Descriptors for the Prado 120 and 150. The RVCS database is:

"RVCS allows vehicle manufacturers to electronically certify that the vehicles that they supply to the Australian market meet prescribed safety standards specified in the Australian Design Rules (ADRs). The system allows lodgement of test data using electronic forms software and is administered by the Vehicle Safety Standards Branch(VSS)"

They have details as to the manufacturer supplied heights and tyres for those vehicles. This is what i understand police and registration authorities use.

Im reposting here from a post in FJCC, with links to the relevant bits.

I can see the discussion has going through the usual discussion, that i consider comes from the very confusing way the specifications are written.

These are the federal rules in VSB-14 (V2.1). VSB-14 is also used in Qld.

The bit that is circled in red says a 50 mm suspension lift is OK on a vehicle equipped with ESC (like the FJ). The next paragraph say any other lift (eg tyres) isnt, and needs certification.

                  https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicl.../vsb_ncop.aspx

Below are the Qld minor modification rules.

The bit that is circled in blue says a 50 mm suspension lift is OK on a vehicle equipped with ESC (like the FJ). Any other lift (eg tyres) isnt, and needs certification.

                  https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Ve...-modifications

Its worth noting that lifting an ESC vehicle only became allowed in VSB14 V2.1 - Nov 2015, In the previous version, V2.0, you were not allowed to modify a ESC vehicle suspension / tyres etc at all:

                  .

The saving grace is NSW (that i know of), and their "Suspension Manual". This allows a 50 mm suspension + 25 mm wheel increase, even for ESC vehicles.

                  http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/...ide-height.pdf

This is what is considered a "minor modification" in NSW:

ie. 50 mm suspension and 25 mm wheel are minor mods. Minor mods DO NOT need to be tested, and they explicitly mention ESC:

Hopefully someone will do the detailed research for other states.

Qld was as per NSW up until Feb this year and then reverted to the NCOP wording. Ah well. I will try and become an approved person then I will test mine with lift and std size tyres against a stock Prado and mine running 70 profile. Might take a while so dont hold your breath. I hate how mine now looks with 65 profile tyres but I knowmit is just as capable as before and wont get defected.

                      I found this:http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/perl/...2009083717.cmd
The figures here for trim are different to craigm's. Diesel and petrol vary slightly but at worst the front trim is 523 mm [+50mm =573mm] and rear trim is 565 mm [+50mm = 616mm]. By my reading that means if your front trim is less than 573 mm and rear trim is less than 615 mm then you are still legal. Remember that trim is measured from the centre of the wheel to the guard.

Note that Craig's 150 link is for the SWB. Hence the difference in heights.

It's not getting defected that worries me most (I live in a rural area with mostly old fashioned coppers that look after the community and don't bother people who aren't causing trouble) it's hitting some poor bastard (or getting hit myself) and then having my insurance company wipe me- or in extreme cases possibly face prosecution from police for having an unroadworthy vehicle...

I know a couple of issues in the past where nothing was said about heavily modded vehicles in crashes having accidents and insurance did not quibble but in the wake of this blitz and media attention that may change.

As an aside I am very happy for putting scales under caravans and tow vehicles. I have seen so much ignorance and bad behaviour and the accident stats reflect some of that. A Magna towing a 2.5t tare van, dual cabs loaded to the stratosphere pulling a block of flats etc etc.
