  • Not sure about the retro theme on the interior as well.

Not that petrol is a bad thing.
That was poorly worded, i wasn't specifically saying the lack of diesel was an insult.
and anyway, the 40/45 series had diesels in them from the end of 1972, the H series in 45's and couple of years later the B series in 40's.

You don't have to get one, and if you wanted one there is a good six month wait already .... so there are plenty of people who want/like them.
I think you get a lot more car in the FJ ... I don't want carpets and cloth seats.
Have you sat in one? its tiny, even in comparison to a 40 series.
I'm not saying they wont sell well, of course they will, but six month wait? really? there's heaps around SA?

I want to like it, I like the exterior, but after just sitting in another one, theres something missing, more windscreen? standard coloured plastics? i dont know.

      • fess up wooley, you are just trying to rationalise your purchase of a Prado by dissing the FJ.
Ok, I now drive an FJ Cruiser but did have an 90 series Prado for 11 years and before that, 4Runners from 1985.

          • Hey guys,
Newbie here..I was recently flipping between buying another Prado or an SR5 Hilux.
I ended up taking the FJ for a spin and loved it.
I picked it up last week, awsome off road and not too shabby on it either.
Here it is at 5 days old...(that is if I'm allowed to post pics yet)...Here goes nothing..All the best...Neil

            Edited...pics not working, back soon.

            • I have opted for the FJ Cruiser from Avis on long-term hires several times on stints in Nevada and Colorado for work. Its an awesome, awesome 4WD. On the last trip in Feb it really showed its smarts. High up in the Rockies, amazing control on very steep twisty packed snow / ice roads, no chains, up and down hill, the electronic interventions aren't too brutal and even my very nervous colleague relaxed. (He's nervous about everything, particularly me trying to remember to drive on the right.) Avis rules precluded any serious rock climbing. They're very popular over there.

Takes a bit of getting used to, at first I found the distance to the screen a bit odd but the driving position came easy quickly. Carries 4 blokes no problem. Generous carrying capacity. The plastic / rubber floors and durable interior trim are far better than the GX-spec Landcruiser 80, 100s etc. Very handy in the winter. Heaps of grunt when you need it.

              • Thinking of selling the Prado for one of these. Anyone know the true fuel consumption compared to a 4.0 Prado?

                Comment

                • Hi DLJ

It really is a 150 Prado drivetrain with a different body and interior, so the fuel consumption will be similar to the current 150 petrol. I have one and it varies from 10l/100kms (two people and weekend luggage on the highway) to 18.5l/100kms (fully loaded for a months touring on low range tracks). Round town we get around the 13l/100kms.

As a comparison we recently did Easter with 4 120 D4D's and at the end we used 125lts over the period and the diesels used 106lts over the same period, we all had about the same load and traveled in convoy so we did the same type of driving. Take into account the rediculous cost of diesel in Australia and maintainace costs and you will be very close to even for the average owners use of 20,000kms pa.

                  Regards, Richo.

Be good if there were an FJ section here, where all the similarities could be discussed in thier own threads

Im sure you could just swap the centre diff inners, and get the same effect.

I will do some homework on it whilst its on the hoist this week.
How'd you go with this Darren?

                        • Hi,
Regarding actual fuel economy for the FJ cruiser. I've had mine since early May and have travelled about 2000K so far. Average economy is 13.2L/100. Driving has been around town, one 500K highway driving leg and 2 days of low range driving totaling about 60-70Ks. A long way from the claimed 11.4l/100. If the general assumption about new engines "loosening up" is true I might see the figure improve. If I could work out how, I'd include one of those Fuelly badges in my signature, but in the meantime those who are interested will have to visit http://www.fuelly.com/driver/s35e140/fj-cruiser to see my success or failure

BTW we love the car - its a bit different to look at and so far has performed very well off road.

                          Cheers
PS - would be great if there was an FJ Cruiser section to the forum - there are abt 300 of them on the road in Oz after on 3mths on the market.

                          • I mentioned this to Ben the other day and said I would get some pics for him.... here are the sneak peaks of the new XROX Bar that has just been developed for the AUS market's FJ Cruiser. It is currently undergoing AirBag compliance testing and as such is not yet available to the public. The bar is built by Outback Accessories in Western Australia. By the way, they are also a winch bar...

Here are the FJ spy shots The set up includes a windscreen washer bottle relocate kit and mounting tabs for the stock fog lights.

                            • I was talking with them yesterday morning when we had our new bash plates fitted and we discussed the potential for a market in the US? Cost isn't confirmed as yet but the XROX for other models retails from around $900 aud.

Ben, they also have one to suit the FJ40 with a high mount winch option!!

                              Mitch

There is an optional bash plate that can be seen in the last picture. This will be zinc plated for retail sale and not painted black.
